SMS gateway - who is sending?

If you send a SMS from a webpage on a moblie phone - can you then
somehow identify the number of the person sending the SMS? Or will
sender have to enter there own number, in order for the system to be
able to send a SMS that reciever can respond to?

I would not expect the SMSC (message centre) to be able to
identify the phone number of someone using a phone-based
browser to lodge messages via the Internet and SMPP protocol.
The SMSC might ask the sender for a number (up to 20 digits) or
short text (up to 11 alphanumeric characters) to plug into the
originator address field. Or it might not.

And if the originator address field is alphanumeric, rather than
numeric, I'd be very surprised if the receiving handset could
answer (unless it tried to match the text with its phonebook
entry names - unlikely).
