Motorola P280 rave and questions

Thanks to all who recommended the Motorola P280 for its RF and audio
quality (especially Doug).  I just bought one through Ebay and it's
great!!!   It can hold a solid connection where my SE T300 either
wouldn't connect at all or broke up constantly.

The P280 is bulky; it isn't stylish and doesn't have a color screen,
built-in MP3 player, camera, or trash compacter.  But as a PHONE, it's
terrific.

Now for my questions:

1.  Is the faceplate on the P280 replaceable?  Mine has a few scuffs
over the screen area, and I'd like to replace it if possible.  But
I've been googling and haven't been able to find anyone who sells P280
faceplates.

2.  Are there quirks to the P280 IR?  I can't beam contacts from my
Palm m505 to the P280.

Thanks for your advice.

My pleasure.

There are.  The old firmware made PDA linking impossible.  What do you
have on the phone?

The phone has PAN4_G_01.06_14R which I understand is a fairly recent
version.

If you need more info perhaps it's better to go offline at this point.
My email is un-munged.

Having IR problems with that version is surprising.  But there is
little info about what the .20R flash changes, so I don't know what to
recommend.  Short of finding that PDA model and testing with one of my
.20R phones, I don't know what I can do.

The P280 wasnt sold in qtys that would dictate a market large enough for the
3rd party manufacturers to make the variety of aftermarket goodies you are
so used to seeing for say the NOKIAs. The only plate that you could get
would be a real P280 plate from Moto. You may be able to findf a real one at
a authorized full service Moto repair facility or call Moto and try to get
one direct. Moto has controls on what they will and will not sell to the
General Public, but a faceplate should be OK.
The Moto P280 has a known Infra Red issue. That and a problem with address
book entries dissapeared are fixed by Firmware update .14r. the last release
is .20r. You will need to send (and pay) to Motorola (unless u r under
warranty and can prove it ) or find someone on here or Howard Forums to
Flash it. (Doug has been getting into it, maybe he will read and respond)
OK, there ya go.

I've had  a P280 for a year. Great RF. Warning about use of headset
with the phone. P280 has an established problem with frequent use of
2.5 mm plug headset... either the mic or headphone portion at
recepticle or on circuit board goes out. You might want to try
bluetooth adapter that you can leave in the phone permanently.. that
might prevent problem. I had to exchange the handset 4 times over the
year for that problem and it recently went out again beyong warranty.

I finally had the headset jack go out on one of mine.  I opened it up
and found one of the soldered legs came free from the board.  It was a
quick solder job to fix it.
