Is there any way I can send an SMS message from my cellphone to a
particular email address?  What sort of hardware/software would I
need?  I know of plenty of ways to go from email to cell phone SMS.
But can I go the other way?

Thanks,
Saviz

send an sms to +358405174761

email@domain.co your text blah blah blah

remember to put a space between the email address and your text.
It's a service of a Finnish company and it's free of charge. You just
pay your normal SMS fee.

You can use all types of GSM cards allowing SMS-sending.

Many phone companies now have SMS to email gateways.  Just call your
customer service and ask if they have such a service.

Connectotel's Mmail.

http://connectotel.com

You do it by sending email in the format:  Choose new message.  Type
email address, space type message.  Send.  Send to +447747782320
If you register with the service the receiver can reply to your mail.

There's a free service called M-Mail described here:

Hope this helps.

Hello from Asia, Marcus.

I am interested in a way for my phone to
offload saved SMS messages and phonebook
data to an online wap-based storage backup.

I think that, this way, I can keep the on-phone
memory usage more streamlined, trim and lean.

This way, I also think, I can perform emergency
data restoration from the online backup in case
I am on the move and far away from my home PC
that contains the backup on its hard disc. I
simply browse to my wap site and download the
backup data that I require.

Might you be aware of a way to do this, an
on-phone java applet perhaps that can export
the phonebook/SMS data to the wap site or some
such open-source solution?

Thanks a lot for your time.

Celine

What is your carrier?  If you have T-Mobile, just put
somebody@somewhere.com (or whatever) at the start of your message,
then leave one space between the address and your message text, and
send the message to 500 instead of an ordinary phone number.

AT&T Wireless uses the same format except you send the message to
0000000000 (ten zeros) instead of 500.

Other carriers may have similar arrangements but these are the only
two that I know about.
