I will be buying my first two cell phones and would like to get your
opinions about ATTWS and T Mobile GSM services in Chicago and Detroit
metro areas.

The features that are important to me are:

Solid reception and transmission
Web browsing/email
Family plans
Well organized menus/large display
Possibly tri-band systems for use overseas

I was considering Nokia 6800 (dual band) and Samsung S 105. Any other
ideas you guys might want to share would be very welcome. Also any
comments on other GSM networks (Cingular etc.) would be appreciated.

To make the long story short what is the best GSM network and the best
cell phone on those networks with web browsing/email features

Thanks,

George

Be afraid, be very afraid of T-Mobile. It is the worst cell phone
company I have seen in years.  In general they lie, the products don't
work well on the system, and customer service stinks.  You won't get
much by going with T-Mobile

Funny, I've been a T-Mobile customer since 1995, when they were Ominipoint.
I've not had any problems.  My phones and service have worked great in NY,
LA, La Vegas, Miami, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, etc.  Customer
service has, in my case, bent over backwards to help me when I asked for it.
The international roaming rates are way better than anyone else's, and now
with roaming agreements with Cingular and ATT, the GSM coverage is about the
same for all three companies in the US.  Oh yeah, with regard to GSM, you
can buy any unlocked phone and plug in your SIM, so if you don't like the
offerings of one carrier, feel free to buy a different phone from the
hundreds of outlets that sell unlocked GSM phones.  While I agree that
everybody has different experiences with their carriers, I will not say that
T-mobile is great, nor will I say that they are terrible.  I will say that
I've had great experiences.  IMHO, that's better than telling someone that
they should be afraid and that, basically, the company lies and is terrible.
You may have had bad experiences, which is hardly the same as a company
being terrible.

If the service doesn't work for you go to Sprint PCS.  Their
commercials are funnier.

Just to put it in perspective, Tom has reported a bad experience
w/T-Mo here on the NG.  IIRC, he lives, commutes or works in a
weak signal area, and to T-Mo's credit, they've swapped out his
equipment numerous times.  I think Tom is blaming the phone and
wants out of his contract, but if I remember his story, it sounded
more like weak coverage .  (Tom, if I'm not getting all the details
right, I apologize- feel free to correct me).  I've never had anything
but good experiences with T-Mo- sure they aren't perfect but their
CS has always been helpful, and coverage here in Denver is
excellent- better than in KC where I started with them.

Both T-Mo and AT&T offer "risk-free" trial periods so
you can try the phone where you need it to work.

Tom I know you're on a crusade for a perceived injustice and can't be
reasoned with.  But really, these platitudes make you look more
foolish every day.

Either will work for you in metro areas.

>Well organized menus/large display

A function of the phones and not related to the service used.

>Possibly tri-band systems for use overseas

Either will work though AT&T has fewer roaming agreements at present.
Also AT&T will not release unlock codes so you'd be limited to use
your AT&T account and not be able to use a local prepaid account.
