I'm looking for a cellular modem for my embedded project.  It needs to be
GSM and use a standard serial connector.  My embedded PC104 board has serial
ports but no pcmia slots.  I need to be able to call this system, have it
answer, then retrieve data.  Currently doing this with an old brick phone
and the Motorola Interface, however that technology is gone and replacement
items are hard to find.

I'm looking at the Microcomm MTCBA-G-F2 however they seem to be out of stock
a lot.

Does anyone have suggestions?

Wavecom modems seem to be very highly regarded these days.  It's
the brand I'm seriously considering buying.

What country and/or bands are you operating in?  Someone might
have a more specific recommendation.

The equipment will stay in North America.  The equipment is skid mounted and
does move to different locations throughout the US.

The Seimens TC35 looks promising as well, however I will have to find a
distribution center and try to get some prices from someone.

I need to dig around on the Wavecomm site, didn't see much info there
however I just barely browsed it.

Thanks for the ideas.

I've been very impressed by Siemens handsets for years, and use
them myself.  But I've read negative comments about their modems.
I seem to remember reading that their modem firmware development
has been outsourced since the M20, and suffers as a consequence.
A google groups search should turn up some first-hand references.

http://www.airdesk.net/tech_manufacturer.php?man=3 is the US
distributor.

Our experience with those units has not been so good. Recommend the
Wavecom Fastrack instead.

Hope this helps.

maybe take a look at http://www.rim.net/products/oem/index.shtml would this
be able to be adapted?

Here's a release on a 800/1900 or 900/1800 MHz GSM module, the Nokia 12:

Depending on how many units you need, and whether you need a
consistent supply for the future, you might want to look at the
Ericsson R520m cellphone. You can get them for under $100. Just throw
a serial cable on, and it should work. Tri-band, GPRS, external
antenna jack as well. They only need a 5v supply. You'd probably want
to wire a relay of some kind to the power switch so that the phone
could be turned on and off programmatically.

This is of course a hackish solution, but it is cheap. OTOH, given my
problems with the Motorola T720i - can't keep an active GPRS link up
for more than 24h before there's a problem - I would do some testing
for robustness first.

Do you know if it auto answers okay?  The Nokia phones modem can't see the
ring response and they will not answer an incoming data call.  Most of the
Motorola's I've fooled with seem to auto answer okay.

Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard

I can recommend the Siemens MC45.
It's similar to Siemens Tc35 but 3-Band(900,1800,1900) GPRS and has two(!)
serial Interfaces.

The Wavecom Fastrack is very good. We use it in conjunction with SMS
to e-mail and e-mail to SMS software.

Previously used the Siemens M20T but decided not to use the Siemens
TC35 when it was launched as the "upgrade" to the M20T, because of its
inferior firmware.

Hope this helps.
