Anyone know if/how I can find out about cellular roaming service in China,
specifically Lanzhou?

I do all my travel in Europe and Africa, so Asia is new to me.

I'm travelling to Seoul, Beijing and Lanzhou and am trying to figure a
cellular rental solution.

Any and all advice appreciated.

Thanks much.

Much cheaper to just buy a Top-Up SIM card at any Post office (airport will
have). These cards come in multiples of  100 Rmb.  Quite easy to set up
yourself or ask the Post office staff to do it for you..  Your will of
course have a new local number  with the card.  So remember  to tell your
friends of the new number.  Roaming is expensive compared to getting a local
top-up SIM card.

You could try calling your service provider and see if they have a back
to back agreement with a telco in China.  I've travelled to China on
many occassions with Vodafone and it always worked

You'd think it would be so easy. My provider is Sprint, who told me I needed
to rent a GSM phone (they are CDMA) to roam, even though other people say
they've gotten their CDMA Sprint phones to roam in China. Also, the Sprint
rep said he could tell me they had coverage in the largest of cities, but
could not tell me about the smaller spots like Lanzhou....

Ah, for the days of a GSM provider at home and an unlocked GSM phone!

Lanzhou is not a small city:) at all. it is both covered by CDMA and
GSM. Roaming in China, even a tiny city, u can serverd by GSM network.
