I am looking to get  GSM phone for my mom and we live in the NYC metro
area where GSM is supposedly good enough for my mom.  I want to get
her a free phone for emergencies and also for N/W minutes to call LD.

The local AT&T Store and Amazon are offering almost every phone for
free.  Here are some:

T721, MPX200, NEC 525, Samsung X426 (but it has no external caller
ID).  My mom only wants a flip phone because she feels it is more
comfortable to talk on.

I love my NEC 525 but it is very complicated. If your mom isn't good with
electronics (ie making the VCR stop blinking) I don't recommend it. The MPX
has Microsoft stuff built into it so unless she needs that I don't recommend
it. I don't know about the others.

I am thinking of getting a Motorola V300. I like my SE T610, but I want
better reception.

I picked up the Motorola V300 and the reception is excellent with a
battery life comparable to the SE T610. I have yet to see a call drop
in any of the areas that my SE T610 would drop.

Do you know where I can get the V300 at the cheepest price. I have
TMOBILE service already so I would not be activating service??
