Is it cheaper to use my UK Vodfone account to phone back to the UK from Las
Vegas or by a PAYG sim card over there and use it?
TIA,

It all depends on how long you plan to be in LV and how many calls you
make back to the UK. If it's only occasionally it's probably a wash
as to if it's cheaper to use roaming on your Voda account or get a
local cingular or T-Mobile prepaid "PAYG" account. cingular's PAYG is
about the same rate as the T-Mobile account though the T-Mobile
account can be used throughout the T-Mobile system in the US whereas
the cingular account can only be used in California, Nevada and
Washington state. If you are only going to be in LV either would work
for you. T-Mobile is a "virtual" operator using cingular's network in
NV similarly to the way Virgin uses T-Mobile's network in the UK.

It is a given that a prepaid based in the USA will be less expensive.
Roaming International call are obscenely expensive. In fact even
roaming local calls can be obscenely expensive.

That's very true, but if you take into account the initial cost of
getting a local SIM, it can work out cheaper to roam if you're only
going to make a few calls.

Look at ecallplus prepaid service. You need a US frequency TDMA phone;
Nokia 5165 is cheap on ebay and will work like a champ. International
calling is supported and available at no additional charge to a list of
countries, including the UK. Might be nice to have a lower cost calling
plan dialing US from the US.

That depends on your Vodaphone roaming charges, how many calls and how
long you'll be in the US. Prepaid minutes expire, but if you make a
lot of domestic calls, it may be cheaper.
If you're going to make international calls, get an account with a
dial-around provider such as OneSuite, Pincity, or Tel3.
