CAN I (THE AVERAGE JOE) UNLOCK THIS PHONE MYSELF...FOR FREE?

IF SO....PLEASE....TELL ME HOW......

I HAVE PST BUT.....CAN NEVER GET PAST THE READ SUBSIDY CODE INFO....

ANY OTHER PROGRAMS OUT THERE??

IF ALL ELSE FAILS...WHAT PROG DO I USE TO FLASH THE PHONE TO A NEWER VERSION?

No.

You can't flash the phone without having the subsidy code. You
usually can't get it from the carrier, or you have to pay the carrier
to get it (depending on who the carrier is). In some places you can
pay someone to unlock it (they use hardware that costs MUCH more than
an unlocked phone).
