Alternatively forget about the cable, buy a bluetooth dongle for the PC and
use that. Once the dongle is installed on the PC, no further software is
required to transfer files between the phone and PC. To move a photo from
the phone to the PC, select the photo on the phone, press menu, select move
or copy (move to remove the photo from the phone, copy to leave a copy on
it), select the target device (in this case your PC).
To transfer a photo from the PC to the phone, right click the file, point to
"Send to..." select "Bluetooth", select the target device (in this case your
phone). The bluetooth dongle I use is this one,
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=105969 which costs 32 quid,
although you can get cheaper.

But he's already laid out good money for a cable, and he will get it to work
if he follows above instructions. Plus if he wants to flex/flash his phone
up to a V600, he can, but he can't with bluetooth

I've found that if I create a new file it then allows me to try
accessing the phone, but then says the phone is disconnected. XP still
says the new hardware won't work thru lack of drivers.
