v551 - as laptop modem

I was reviewing old messages on how to use my v551 as a modem and saw
that I needed to activate a $3.99 wireless internet package (Cingular)
that would give me CSD. All I really need is the CSD and then I can
dial up my ISP. However, now talking to Cingular, they are saying that
this is old technology and is being phased out and that I should use
the new stuff (gprs) . Which is, naturally, far more expensive but
apparently faster.

$24.95 for 10mb. I wonder how many MB I use when I check email and
drop in on my home pc via Remote Desktop.

Is this the case? CSD is dead?

CSD is still working here in Northern California, but for how much longer is
unknown.

MEdia Net Unlimited is $20/month, and works fine with a laptop -- just add the
feature, and *don't* tell Cingular what you intend to do with it (or you'll be
steered to a much more expensive feature).

Thanks John. I've never used MediaNet. How do I use it as a modem for
the laptop?

Do I need a handset modem driver? Also, I found these two on internet.
What is that ISPDA thing?

-----------------------
How to set up DUN (Dial Up Networking) on a laptop
1. Setup bluetooth modem (Phone and Modems in Control Panel)
2. Add this to advanced modem config AT+CGDCONT=1, "ip",
"wap.cingular"
3. Use the following login info:
user: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
pass: CINGULAR1
4. Dial: *99***1#
5. in bluetooth settings on the Treo enable dial up networking.
---------------------------------

ID: ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Pass: CINGULAR1
Init String: &f&d2&c1+cgdcont=1,"IP","isp.cingular"

Also, under your "Connection Settings" be sure to uncheck the box that
indicates you need a proxy server (you don't).

The "Access Point" should be "isp.cingular"

Yes.

You're on your own with those.

>What is that ISPDA thing?

DA = Data Acceleration.  Doesn't apply to MEdia Net.

Yes, this works great and I have used an Apple iBook, a Palm Tungsten T3 and an
iPaq h1940 to connect to the net via the v551 and Bluetooth.

But is there any way I can use the v551 to dial up my existing landline ISP?
There may be times when I need or want to do that rather than using MEdiaNet.

Yes with CSD (if supported in your area).  No with GPRS.
