I verified that I have no voicemail, SMS (in the inbox, sent, draft,
etc. folders), email (none in my SprintPCS email), or other messages.
Then I removed the battery for 30+ seconds andd when I turn on the
phone, the envelope icon is still there.
Thanks for the ideas so far. I havent used IM or Yahoo mail yet, so I
dont think I would have to delete anything from there. I checked
gmail, but that shouldnt register on the handset.
Any other workarounds come to mind?

Menu|Messages|Info Services and Menu|Messages|Browser Msgs both have
to be empty on my L6, I'm guessing the same applies to the V3 which
seems to be an L6 with a hinge :-)

Try sending yourself a new message from another phone or a PC. Once
you've read and deleted it the icon may go away. I have had a similar
problem with the voicemail icon not receiving the instruction to turn
off the icon. Opening a new message forced the instruction to turn it
off.
