This stinks!  I just got a SLVR and noticed this, this means Gmail
application, google maps for mobile, opera mini, etc, will not let you
use T9/ITAP mode.

It's apparently the J2ME runtimes on the motorola slvr/razr phones,
surely something is going to be done about this?

I have a SLVR, and have no trouble using iTAP. When in an edit field press
Menu, and choose Entry Setup. (Or something like that, my phone isn't with
me atm while it's charging.)

Actually it does, if set up properly.
