I just replaced my ancient handset with a Motorola V325i. When I am on
a phone call, I can hear a high pitched squeal coming out of its tiny
earpiece speaker. It is constant in pitch and amplitude. It is not very
loud, but I don't like it.

I obtained the new V325i handset from a Verizon company store, if that
matters.

Is this a design defect, or is this individual V325i broken?

Don't mess with it any longer. As long as it is new and you are within
the return policy I would run down to the store and have it replaced.
No need in having to put up with something like that. I bet that drove
you crazy?

Cheers!

I believe that the sound is the power supply for the little video
screen on the cell phone. When the screen goes dark, the squeal stops.
When the screen lights up, the squeal starts. It does not matter if
a voice call is in progress or not.

I can hear a similar sound if I hold my old Palm PDA up to my ear.

I showed the phone to two coworkers and described the problem. Neither
one of them could hear the sound. And both of these guys are younger
than me! Ha! That's what you little punks get for listening to all
that loud music. Your ears are more jacked than those of a middle-aged
man.

Anyway, now I hesitate to take the phone back to Verizon. I doubt that
the sales staff will be able to hear the sound. They will just think
that I'm mean and crazy.

They don't have to hear it, just tell them you want a new one.  Mean
and crazy people are entitled to get replacement phones just like
normal people! ;-)
