Need help - SIM question.

My Motorola V557 recently died (no display anymore but can still make
calls). I bought an unlocked RAZR V3i. If I transfer the SIM from the
V557 to the V3i should my phonebook and other personal settings
transfer? I tried it and it recognizes a Cingular network (my
provider) and the cells phone number but when I check the phonebook
it's empty. Do I need to try to extract the phonebook from the V557
using Mobile Phonetools or something. Does the SIM need to be in the
V557 for me to access the phonebook (I'd prefer handling the SIM as
little as possible)?
Finally, if there's a recommended website that goes into great detail
on how this works (and I'm sure there are, I just haven't found it),
please pass along.

You need to put the SIM back into the 557 and copy the phone memory to
the SIM. However, that will be difficult without the display to guide
you. Mobilr Phone Tools is your best bet as you don't need the dispaly
on the phone. You will need to move the SIM to the 557 to use it with
MPT then put it back in the v3 when you're done and ready to connect the
v3 to MPT. Don't worry about handling the SIM. I move mine between
phones a lot or swap it for prepaid SIMs when out of the country. They
are quite durable.

You can store phone numbers in the phone or in the SIM. If they didn't
travel with the SIM, you can presume they are stored in the phone.
Storing in the phone allows you to have multiple entries per person, with
indicators for "work" " home", and such. The SIM storage method is
simplistic, and truncates names as well.

That would be the best way. If you hadn't already set up MPT, that might
be hard to do without a display. I've only used Bluetooth. It might be
simpler with USB.

You might salvage what you can by stepping through the process of copying
the phone directory to SIM, wither with someone else's v557 or the manual
to guide you through the steps.

SIMs are pretty sturdy. Handling it for these operations shouldn't be
a problem.

Thanks for the responses.
I was able to get most of the information over using Phone Tools. Had
a little problem at first because my version didn't recognize the V557
(and I had to hunt down the disk) but after an update, all was good.

You did cause me to install MPT and take a new backup of my phone.

This was the first time on a new laptop, and I only had a 3.11 install
image. Over 100 MB of updates, to 3.25, then 3.28, then I stopped looking.

I made sure that the phone was recognized via bluetooth in 3.11 (it was
not, I had to do an F6 configuration of the TAPI modem).

It was not recognized in 4.x, and 4.x doesn't let you proceed without a
phone to get to the manual configuration. I rebooted the PC, and then
it was recognized.
