That depends on whehter you saved your contacts on the SIM card or on
the phone. The V3 offers both options. If your contacts are on the SIM,
then they should either be instantly available on the new phone, or you
can copy them from the SIM to the internal phonebook.

If you have the contacts in the internal phonebook of your V3, you will
need Motorola Phone Tools and Outlook on the PC. You can then use MPT to
copy the contacts to the Outlook database. And hopefully there is a
software for your new phone that allows to copy Outlook contacts to the
phone. For most phones there is.

How can I tell where they are stored? If they are on the phone
must I save them to the SIM or just copy them to the SIM? tia

Open Phone Book, go to a contact and select EDIT.  Where is it stored?
Phone or SIM?  Each contact can be stored in either place.

Your contacts stored on the SIM will be very basic; there will be no
entries for address, birth date etc. Your contacts stored on the phone
memory, will allow you to set-up voice dial, selective ringtone, plus
additional contact information.  If you have nothing critical stored
like: address, selective ring, or voice dial...then simply copy them
over to SIM and they will be available when inserted in the new phone.

If you want to preserve contact data, do as suggested copy to  Outlook.
Then use whatever software to copy from Outlook into the new phone.

Open the phonebook on your V3.  Beside each entry you'll see a photo, a
blue flower, or a page with a yellow symbol.  The first two mean it's
stored in your phone's memory, the last one means it's stored on the SIM.

To move an entry from the phone's memory to the SIM: Select the entry,
View, Edit, Store to, Change, SIM.

To copy all entries to the SIM: Phonebook, Menu, Copy, All to SIM.

Note that the SIM can only hold 255 numbers, and it won't store
Categories, Types, Voice Names, Ringer IDs, or Pictures.
