Moto Phone Tools Issue

When I plug my Razor V3i (not Itunes) into my PC, and start MPT, MPT
keeps saying initializing but it wont connect the phone.

I have completely reinstalled MPT several times. But that didn't fix
the issue.

I am trying to connect my phone by USB. I am using the USB cable that
Moto provided (and it has worked fine before).

Using Windows Vista Ultimate Home Edition

(for what it is worth, this is a pretty bad piece of software that
needs to be completely over-hauled in my opinion)

Make sure your phone USB is configured for Data Connection, not Data
Card.

checked that already and it is correct.

Try removing the "Motorola USB Modem" from Modems in Device Manager
(assuming Vista still has that). Restart MPT and wait for it to instruct
you to plug the phone in.

i did as you suggested- going to the device manager, remving the moto
modem, restarted MPT but it didnt give me the option to plug in the
phone.

Try this:

1. In Mobile Phone Tools go to General Setup
2. Go to the Communication Tab
3. Click on Change Modem
4. Click Next
5. Make sure Motorola USB Modem is highlighted and click Next
6. Check the box for Do not Automatically Detect and click Next
7. On the left side choose Motorola GSM and on the right side choose
your model and click Next
8. Click Finish
9. Click OK out of the General Setup

I'm happy it worked. I don't claim originality here - I fought the
same battle as you did - this method was posted somewhere on the net
quite a while ago. It took me many days to discover it.

My own post in which I passed it on to someone else is dated
12/26/2005. So this has been going on for quite a while, and it's
tripped up a lot of people. Apparently the software still hasn't been
altered to make this process any easier.

"A lot" is an understatement. I've been using it on different phones and
different computers for many years and it's _always_ a chore to get it
working. I've helped numerous users get it working with similar
instructions to yours. Bluetooth does seem to simplify things slightly.

I suspect that not enough people buy it to make it worthwhile for
Motorola to pay for it to be fixed properly. There are periodic updates
but none that fix the core problems.

I have to do this every time I start MPT, plus I have to choose a
different model than that of my actual phone.

To say that MPT needs to be overhauled is an understatement. It's by far
the flakiest piece of Windows software I've used. I don't know why it
keeps reinstalling the USB modem over and over again, or why it
sometimes detects the phone, sometimes not.

If I use Bluetooth instead of USB it works better. I still have to go
through the "change modem" and "do not automatically detect" rigmarole,
but it always detects the phone, unlike with USB.

MPT actually works fine when properly installed.
Get some technical help.

Get a clue...seriously.

How difficult is it to install a piece of software. It's flakey, and
almost everyone who uses it knows it.

Fortunately, I rarely use Windows...but I've used MPT, and it's a real
piece of sh.t...sorta like your bi-monthly rand about cell chargers.

What's amusing about the bi-monthly rant about chargers is that the
information isn't even correct.

Feel free to prove that, if you can.  But of course you won't, because
it is correct -- you're just a blowhard with nothing to back up your
claims.

Oh yeah...and it's real annoying.

Lately, he's been hanging around in some of the photography groups
dispensing idiotic advice, posting mediocre images taken with his
crappy digital camera, and in general, being a pest.

Yes, I've seen some of the follow-ups, correcting his misinformation.
Kill-files are wonderful, but unfortunately some people feel compelled
to respond to every idiotic post he writes. They don't understand that
he thrives on the attention he gets by being annoying.

Usenet seems to bring out the worst in certain people, and Navas is one
of them. He's a pathological liar that desperately wants attention, even
when that attention is ridicule. He knows he'll get a reaction by making
up stories, and the more ridiculous they are the more attention he gets.

You'd think that the issues with Motorola Phone Tools, which are widely
acknowledged by everyone that has ever used them, would be something he
wouldn't lie about---and you'd be wrong!

Trying to brand me a liar just because I expose your own distortions is
pretty much par for your sorry course, and that you can't get MTP to
work properly speaks volumes about your lack of real expertise.

Doesn't seem to be.  No such problem in any of the ones I've set up.
Did you set the Default profile properly?  Which version of MPT?  Which
USB Modem driver is installed?

Try:
1. Remove battery reset of the phone.
2. Completely removing the modem and USB driver from Device Manager, and
reinstall.

wow this is a really nice piece of software!
why cant moto make something like this?
it found my phone INSTANTLY... all i did was plug it in... its a snap
to use.. nice looking design...

>wow this is a really nice piece of software!
>why cant moto make something like this?
>it found my phone INSTANTLY... all i did was plug it in... its a snap
>to use.. nice looking design...

For MOBILedit! Forensic v2.6.0.14, I found the following serial #:

Name    Jan Mach
Company Jan Mach
Serial  F5FN8-FHAD7-VR2HE-RG4DV-LJK25

Haven't tried it so I don't know whether it will work.

P.S.  My rant as to why MPT sucks big time, and for so many different
reasons:

1) For my phone, they and Verizon lied about whether I needed a
special USB cable.  They said I did but I didn't believe them and used
a USB cable with the proper-looking connector that I had lying around,
and it worked!

2) I suspect that MPT is reacting to some other software that you have
installed on your computer.  I have several computers lying around but
it would only work with a laptop on which I had freshly wiped and
installed WinXP.  I have read in the forums that MPT has major
problems with Vista.

3) In reality, the only thing that MPT may be good for with your
Verizon phone is copying & editing contacts.  Although they have
colluded with Verizon to agree to restrict your phone use, they tell
you about tethering your phone, making and copying ringtones to your
cell phone, etc. with only a  disclaimer in small print that these
features may be unavailable to you because of the capabilities of your
phone.  In reality, your phone does have these capabilities but
Verizon's flash image has limited them, and they have decided to honor
Verizon's wishes.

4) If you actually do get the proper drivers for your phone (as listed
in one of the previous replies, off of the Motorola site), MPT will
destroy these when it is run.

I have found that I can do everything that my phone is cabable of with
the following software:

Motorola End User Handset USB Drivers 32, 3.3.0.msi
(you may need to point Windows to these drivers when it is finding
your phone's hardware)
Motorola_Software_Update.exe
(this runs in the background to put your phone in the state needed to
copy/transfer files, edit seems, etc. with P2K Commander and P2K Seem
Editor)
P2K Commander 4.9.e.zip
P2K Seem Editor for V710.zip

Sorry for this to be so long but I have been frustrated with
Verizon/MPT for quite a long time.  Of course, if you don't have
Verizon like I do, your phone is probably not as restricted.

P.P.S.  If your phone plays MP3s, you don't have to buy the VCast
Music Manager software.  It is freely downloadable from Verizon as
VZMM2-DL-MOTOR-Bld39-V3m-K1m-L7c-MAXXVE-001.exe (Google for it).

Did you mean that Vista needs overhaul? ;-)  Or both?

What version of MPT are you using?  I believe you need V4.4????? (I'm
not sure just what string replaces the question marks!)

If you have an earlier version, call Motorola Technical Support.
