WGD - 05 Feb 2008 00:57 GMT Have older version of Motorola's Phone Tools - does not support the V3a (though the V3c is in its list)
Wrote to BVRP - no response. Thus what is the best way to upgrade this older software? (and not to have to spend $60 or so for a new SW pkg!)
Tks!
dold@74.usenet.us.com - 05 Feb 2008 01:06 GMT > Wrote to BVRP - no response. Thus what is the best way to upgrade this > older software? (and not to have to spend $60 or so for a new SW pkg!) As far as I know, all versions of MPT will upgrade to the newest version of MPT via the internet. The newer versions check on each startup. The older versions only checked when you Menu-Setup-LiveUpdate. Some of the upgrade steps are many MB, and the system seems to download them one at a time.

In my case the upgrade either didn't happen or didn't work. I went through the motions and it still wouldn't recognize my RAZR V3m.

If yes I had the same situation. I found out after getting it the verizon razors are crippled. Just another way verizon can suck a little more money out of you through there Vcast crap. I am told the phone can be unlocked. I never really looked into it. -- --

[quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > I am told the phone can be unlocked. I never really looked into it. > -- -- Yes, it's a Verizon phone. I complained to Motorola Technical Support and was allowed to download a version of Motorola Phone Tools that DID support the RAZR. I was then able to set up my contacts list and calendar using my computer.
If I had known then what I know now, I would have signed up with a different service provider. I had been with Verizon Wireless for years both with and without a contract and had no problems with the service. It was only after I bought two new RAZRs and signed a new contract that I found out about some of the problems in dealing with Verizon.
I have no interest in watching TV or listening to music using my phone! I don't watch TV at all any more and find that "popular music" mostly just hurt my ears!

I have been with verizon several years back into the Air Touch days... Being a long time customer means sh.t to them...
I thought it would be cute if I could make an mp3 I like into a ring tone. Or easily move a few pictures back and forth from the computer to the phone.
Nothing I had in mind worked. The only way I could make it happen was to use the blood sucking Vcast. Not a chance.
I was able to do a little of what I wanted by putting things on the memory card and renaming the files.
But I was and still am really disappointed with verizon for selling me such a crippled piece of sh.t and not telling me till I bought it. And with motorola for making this neutered piece of crap for verizon.
I guess any whore will swallow if the price is right... -- --
bruceR - 08 Feb 2008 15:33 GMT Go to www.howardforums.com and www.motox.info to learn how to uncripple your phone. It's not hard to do and you'll get what you paid for. While others here may disagree, you bought a phone that Motorola spent millions advertising as having certain capabilities and functions and you had a reasonable expectation that you would get what was advertised. The fact that Verizon disables - I call it cripples - the phone is certainly whithin their rights, but they have a duty to let you know that their product is not as fully featured and capable as the version Motorola advertises. Sounds like a good class action suit!

Sounds like >a good class action suit! I asked what could be done when I got this phone. I was sent to www.howardforums.com. I would have tried to unlock or uncripple if I would have found a straight forward step by step set of instructions to do it. For the most part after spending way to much time reading there I just found opinions there. Someone would say try this. Another guy would say he did but it didn't work. If I could find a direct step by step list of what to do, and what programs I needed to do it I would try.
I finally just burned out reading all the crap there and gave up on doing anything...
Every time I see anyone ask this same question I see them get sent to www.howardforums.com. Never have seen anyone come back and say "thanks, that worked great"...
I feel I am as good as anyone when it comes to tampering with things like this. Not afraid to try, that's for sure.
I never really found anything there I thought was worth trying.

Okay, let me be the first. <G> I did go to howardforums, found where to buy some "uncrippling" software, followed the directions and now have many of the advertised capabilities of my Razr V3m back where they belong -- with me. I bought a CD from cellcables.com -- worked like a charm. HTH.

I checked out cellcables.com and ended up sending them an Email regarding the compatability with Vista. It works with Vista but it seems Verizon put some new software on the Razr and cellcables.com doesn't have the software set up for Verizon's new version. Customer support (which was very responsive) said to check back in a couple of weeks and they would have the new software listed.
I'm curious, how hard is cellcables.com's software to use. Is it like a regular program or what? One thing their site doesn't do is show screen shots.

I used cellcables.com's software and found it extremely easy to do -- no glitches at all. There were lots of illustrations in the documentation they sent, and I just did one step at a time until it was finished. Oh, and they'd had me save the bits and pieces I needed to replace, so if something had gone wrong I could have gone back to the original crippled Razr. NAYY -- just a happy customer.

I'm hoping cellcables.com comes through. I'm sure they will. I just hate forking over more $$ to Verizon. I'd change carriers but they have the best coverage of all. Guess they know it and they figure go ahead and go some where else, you'll be back. By the way, I checked out your Website, love the dogs! WGD - 07 Feb 2008 22:59 GMT Via eBay - for $0.98, yes $o.98 via PayPal, I purchased Motorola's MPT latest ver 4.5.6a said to support ALLTEL CDMA Razr V3a. So far it does not.
BTW, the eBay supplier said the 4.5.6a does NOT support/work with the V3a!
Motorola sent me this afternoon a page of instructions relative to how to make 4.5.6a work with the V3a (CDMA)
Stay tuned. Will see later this evening and report back.

The downloadable URL is a single download that should result in the same level MPT as a series of updates applied to any version of MPT.
The MPT live updates only move one step at a time, so the downloads might total over 100MB, instead of the URL, which is the latest level.

There are a bunch of people working tech support in Indian call centers who speak very good English and who are very understandable and knowledgeable but I never seem to get one of those... <sigh>

A few Indians, generally British educated, speak better English than we do. Most of them speak with an accent that tells you instantly that they are not native speakers. I find that a lot of them are difficult to understand! Of course I have a hearing aid in each ear and sometimes have trouble understanding even native speakers. . . .

Don't delay too long. If that URL is like the one they gave me, it's good for 72 hours!! Once you download it, it's a good idea to make a copy on another disk drive and/or burn a copy to CD/DVD.

It sorta works... It will let you at anything that verizon has not figured out how to charge you for yet. And a couple things they can charge you for...
With these new tools I can...
Sync. Make changes in the phone book. Make changes in the calendar. Make a text message. (Still haven't figured out what that's good for) Make an Internet connection (verizon would love you to do this)
These new phone tools will NOT let you access the directories on the memory card.
I know version 4.0 had something that made me think if the phone weren't crippled you could do a little in that area. Not sure what the selections were called. Something like (my photos or my music)
These new tools let you do a little more. But certainly not all you could.
I have seen what you can do on one that is not crippled. If you want you can move photos and music from the computer to the phone. Make any mp3 a ring tone... Just crap like that. Not really useful, Just fun stuff...
The stuff verizon has 3 of the 4 arrows locked into Vcast crap for.
Any move you make with this phone they want to suck additional money out of you to do it.
OK... This is turning from useful information into a rant about how verizon sucks. And everyone already knows that... Sorry.
