Turning ON err/channel  (#  *  menu + right arrow)

seems to make signal better.

What exactly does turning this on do and does it help with signal strength?

Here in Connecticut we are about one month into being under a hands
free restriction.  If the car is moving you need to be using hands
free to talk.

On my i530 and the wife's i710, the trouble is that if you want to be
ready to receive a call, you have to plug the hands-free into the
phone before you get underway.  The downside is that once you plug the
2.5mm plug into the phone, it only rings in the ear-bud.  Is there any
way to get the phone to ring through the regular speaker on the phone
while the 2.5mm plug is plugged in?

Thanks,

Brian

Here in NY we have been "handsfree" for quite a bit of time now.Being pulled
over 3 times within a month ( luckily not ticketed) I bought a Rocketscience
headset, over the ear with PTT close to the earlobe area. Both my i530 and
i730 ring through the speaker. I did try the Motorola NNTN4744A Soft Install
kit but it got vehicle whine noise into my calls when it was hooked up.It
was totally HANDS FREE and I wished it had not had the vehicle whine during
active calls.
It lists for $80 but bought it for $60 locally.
I am not 100% sure, but there may be an option in your settings to change
ringing preferences when a headset is attached.

Welcome to World of HANDS FREE!

I already looked through all the settings, but your post made me go
back and check again.  Somehow I must have missed the Settings -
Advanced menu, because in there is a setting for Headset/Spker, which
was set to Hdset Only instead of Hdset&Spkr.  In "Hdset Only" the
phone rings in the headset only, in the "Hdset&Spkr" it rings on the
phone speaker only, but the headset can answer the call (with the PTT
button) and use the mic and speaker in the headset.

Thanks for making me recheck those menus!

Good news then.I have actually grown used to the hands free situation
here.Drivers with a phone pressed to thier ear while drifting into my lane
actually look stupid to me now.

Every nextel phone is a speakerphone so you really dont need a headset.

When phone rings press the speaker button and talk - no need to flip
open either. If you have a I730 with screen on front you can make a call
without opening. Must be in recent calls - scroll to it and hit the
speaker button- no need to flip.

Yes this works also.I dialed non-recent calls when I was at red lights in
traffic with no hands free kit.or by pusshing button on top of i730 and vox
activated dialing.
A $12 dash mount holder held the phone while driving made it easier when
using speakerphone also.

Yes, I've used the speakerphone too, mostly if I forget to plug the
earbud/mic into the phone before putting the vehicle in drive.  It
seems to me that the speakerphone picks up more road/wind noise than
the earbud and microphone do, so the speakerphone is always plan B.

After a week of using the hands free with the correct setting in the
phone, I can report that it's working out well. With the earbud
plugged in, the phone now rings on the phone speaker, I then put the
earbud in my ear and hit the PTT button on the speaker and the phone
answers the call.
