I would like to run this by you experts here as I got some questionable
answers from Nextel Support. I have been supplying service to a teenager
that has "Misplaced" the new phone I just bought her. The real story is that
she most likely sold it. The SIM card has been removed and replaced with the
one belonging to the new owner. I have restricted the phone for now as I am
told that this is the only thing that can be done. I understand and will not
complain as I new the risk with this child from the start. I just need to
know if it is true that the restrictions now make this phone useless. The
kid one the phone at tech support sounded confused and had to put me on hold
several times to make sure he had his info right. It would be nice however
if there was indeed a way to really track a stolen phone. It only makes
sense that the SIM would be removed right away and tracking would then be
disabled.
Thanks for any comments.

Your phone settings can be downloaded to the phone when it is turned on. Ask
to have the tracking function to be switched back on the next time the phone
is turned on.

I don't understand what you mean. If the phone has a different SIM in it
now and if I have it turned back on the mobile locator function we work and
I will be able to locate the phone? I get a message on MY Nextel site that
the SIM is different and to call them but when I do they don't know what I
am talking about and have to speak to someone to relay the info the kid
doesn't know to begin with. I see to always get confusing answers. Can
someone please outline the exact condition that exists with this set of
circumstances?

Thanks.

There us still a set of unique numbers assigned only to that phone. they
(Nextel (Sprint)) can stil use those numbers to "see" the phone.

"WT"

So what is your suggestion as to what I can do to possible locate the phone
and clear up this issue. Should I call Nextel again in hopes to get someone
that can help? Are the restrictions I have on this phone now making it
impossible to use? If I remove the restrictions and it is turned on can I
then locate it even with the SIM card removed?

I would do this,  number one kick the sh.t out of the kid you bought
the phone for.

Number two,  Call support in Las Vegas,  ask to speak to either
Christophers, theres an old one and a new one,  the new one is very
very well versed and point blank knows his sh.t.  The older one is
higher echelon.   You can also ask for either Diane or Di an,  not sure
but shes great also.

Also as far as some one the is meticulous with what they tell you,
call the 800 number for porting and ask for Kevin or Maritsa,  both of
these people are NOT going to bullshit you either,  and they will
esculate your call to higher support immediately

Hope this helps you somewhat,  did you at least cancel the second phone
if it was under 15 days its a no brainer,  if its over 15 days your
going to have to pay the cancellation fee of 200 bucks which in my
opinion is worth it,  to avoid any uneccesary bs bills coming in.

The restrictions are only on the SIM card, not the handset itself.  Here's
what you can do.

Call Sprint Nextel Customer service and get the MSN for the phone.  Once
they give you that information, file a police report and give them that
information. I suggest you inform the teen that you have done this. Sprint
Nextel can then track the phone and locate the user.  If this is a camera
phone, the current user will have to switch the MSN on their account in
order to send pictures, which will make it easier to find.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Then what you are saying is that if Nextel said the
phone is now useless then this is wrong info and if I was told there is no
recourse and they have no way of tracking the phone then that is also
inaccurate? I would like not to have to call the police or only as a last
resort anyway. If I spoke to a supervisor could I get things done
differently? I have had this account for years and have would like not to
have to terminate the service but Nextel stills seems to be less then what I
expect.

George.
