Hi:
I'm planning on a Nextel phone for the direct connect feature. In
this mode, do I receive an alert when I'm being called via the normal
cellular paths? If left in Direct connect, will I know I'm being
called?
thanks!

If the sender keys your receiver it beeps once. They/you can also
send an alert that beeps repeatedly until answered. This is not
true if your phone returns a "user not available" message or other
no connection type message.
The system is quite good. Beeped one contractor about a roofing
issue. He answered back that he was on a fishing trip in Canada,
the answer was immediate and clear just like he was in town. We
have more problems with phones in buildings and one area of town
that has poor signal strength (lack of tower??).

I think you should get a nextel and try it out. Direct Connect and Phone
calls are on all the time, there is no switching. If you're on a call, you
won't be able to receive a DC alert, and vice versa.
There is a feature, depending on your phone, where you can use your phone as
walkie talkie only while off the network, then you won't be able to recieve
any calls at that time.
