Nextel accused of stealing
By Tom Giles
Bloomberg News
SAN FRANCISCO - Verizon Wireless accused Nextel Communications of
stealing
unreleased models of its new walkie-talkie telephones and making
hundreds of
calls to test Verizon Wireless' network.

The claims, made in a lawsuit filed yesterday in federal court in
Alexandria, Va., show Nextel "crossed the line of healthy competition,"
said
Jim Gerace, spokesman for Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S.
mobile-phone
company.

Nextel obtained two of Verizon's handsets on June 10 and placed
"hundreds"
of test calls on Verizon's network over the next few days, the suit
says.
Many of the calls passed through Verizon's computer switch in Chantilly,
Va., Verizon said. That's the same network-computer switch that handles
calls for Reston, Va., where Nextel is based.

The moves gave Nextel "valuable, confidential and proprietary business
information," Verizon said. Nextel has and may continue to use that
information "to compete unfairly."

Verizon Wireless is preparing to release a phone that doubles as a
walkie-talkie in what will be the first challenge to Nextel, the only
seller
of push-to-talk phones for the past decade.

my question is how did verizon let these phones go, the article says sued
but as you read it says they obtained them, so which is it verizon.  i don't
feel bad for verizon really.

ill tell you how verizon let them get loose.... some junkie in their tech
department was desperate for cash .... and sold the prototype on the street
to support his miserable drug habit....

duh.... how else would verizon and their 70 billion dollars of debt make a
wrong move????!?!?!??!  hmmm..... tell us now....

Dude... check your facts first.  Wasn't it just a few months, maybe a
year ago, that Nextel filed for Chapter 11?  for their international
division?  I believe Verizon Wireless is swimming in cash right now.
70 billion?  riiiiight... trying to hear out of your bad reception
walkie talkie is getting to your brain

You might want to check facts.....VZW was the ONLY cellular provider
last year who actually turned a profit.  And if i am not mistaken was it
not Nextel who filed chapter 11 for their international division?

True but right before Nextel International went bankrupt Timmy (Nextel CEO) and
Swindler (Nextel Int CFO) decided to change their Name to NII so no one will
associate them with nextel. Pretty slick Huh?

Also Nextel International has "No Recourse" to Nextel. In other words nextel can
reap the profits. But if Nextel International goes bankrupt or gets sued nextel is
protected. Real Slick.....But whet do you expect from the "How Business gets Done
Company?"

If the phones were truly "Stolen" how can VZW prove who made the calls?
Doesn't verizon block stolen phones?

Sounds to me if this really happened then VZW must have someone on the
inside helping the Nextel guys out.  VZW should investigate that before
they start the lawyers in action.

I somehow doubt the head of testing at Nextel went out and broke into
the Verizon Corp. office and made off in the night with the phones.  I'm
sure there is far more to the story than we are being told=)

i got another one for you... why in gods name would nextel need to spy on
verizon's ptt technology when nextel has MOTOROLA making their phones for
them!!!!! why!!! do i need to repeat myself... motorola is the 20th largest
coporation in the US.... they have people in their labs that could build
machines and devices that we , er , you cant even begin to understand....
and if verizon had motorola working on the ptt, you would think nextel would
know about it.... so if verizon doesnt have motorola on the job, they might
as well hire the jack a.s that posted that he worked at a retail nextel
store and didnt even know he could make his twoway  sound come from his
earpiece ( what a sorry , sad , misearable curse too be so retarded ) if not
him , they probaly have qualcomm / kyocera working on one, i can respect
kyocera, but its not moto, nothing is moto, moto is god, i am moto, we are
one , your lives are all insignifacant compared to moto god  , you will all
perish in the wake of the moto god , respect the moto god and your poor
souls MAY be  spared....... sooo......    VERIZON SUCKS, GET A NEXTEL !!!
Bid4Survival - 01 Jul 2003 09:06 GMT
Motorola owns nextel, I herd something about 26% of moto's stock is nextel.
As far as I know the v60 is the phone that will have PTT on it for verizon.
Motorola can tell nextel anything, hey maybe motorola wipped up a couple
v60's for nextel to try out. LOL
Is verizon gona try to sue big brother if its true??? They'll probley will
never have PTT if they do. If they do sure nextel in a way they are sueing
motorola was well aren't they???
Even if their PTT is a sucess NEXTEL will always be #1. I highly doubt their
PTT will work in an analog roaming area. They'll have to have digital
coverage where ever they use that feature. From my understanding nextel has
more digital coverage than any other provider. Once again NEXTEL is #1.

Are you kidding me, have you traveled anywhere at all! I mean I live in
Nassau County, NY and travel frequently, but just this Sunday I was out in
Kings Park, NY at a motorcylce event, my Nextel constantly went in and out
of service, luckily I kept my Verizon when I made the mistake of trying
Nextel, for it had constant service as it does everywhere I travel!
Joshua Miller - 01 Jul 2003 22:32 GMT
Motorola does not OWN Nextel... They OWN STOCK in Nextel.  There is a very
big difference.  And they are slowly but surely selling all that stock off,
year by year, getting rid of all of it.  I'll have to find the news article
that explains it.. but I think they're going to get rid of all but 1 or 2 %
of their stock in Nextel.

Craig McCaw also sold all of his stock in Nextel, he wanted out as well.
He's the guy that owned the network that eventually became ATT
Wireless.

I don't know if i'd go that far, but i do beleive that Verizon is not
quite all they would like to make themselves out to be.

They may be "#1 in customer satisfaction"...bla bla bla, but i dont tend
to put a whole lot of faith into those as i do my own and others
experiences.  In addition if you look at the cumbers, the difference
between the "best" and the "Worst" is not really that much to brag
about=)

Al Bundy... complete with hand down the shorts, balancing a beer and the
tv remote in the other hand,

good to see you've entered the fray!

you all might be surprised but i think the perpetrator who represents al
bundy on these newsgroups is actually quite technologically
sophisticated, from what some of his previous posts said.
