I have the i730 phone. Whoever was the idiot that designed this thing should
not design another phone EVER. The god damn belt clip covers the external
display. What good is an external display if it's covered up all the time.
The damn speaker when the clam shell is opened is on the back of the phone?
What moron put a speaker BEHIND the phone? There have been many times I had
to turn the god damn phone around to hear what the other person was saying.
All this hype about it and to find out it's complete crap pisses me off. Are
there any other phones out there that don't have these ridiculous problems?

No different than the other Nextel clamshells- all of the display face into
the clip. I find it easier to unclip the phone and look, rather than
contort to look down at my waist.
> The damn speaker when the clam shell is opened is on the back of the phone?
First, I believe they were able to put a bigger speaker in it that way.
Second, it makes it much easier to hear when clipped on the sun visor in my
car.

Are you under the impression that you have to talk into the open clamshell
in speaker mode?

I'm aware I don't have to talk with the clamshell open...but if I initiate a
call or start a direct, it usually stays open for the duration some times.
It's just plain ol' dumb being on the back. Being these are all "high"
speakers anyway, it's all directional which means it should be smack in
front of my face. I gotta see about another phone...this is ridiculous.

I sometimes use the phone for impromptu conference calls and it's nice to
have the phone open and see the status while you are using the speaker, like
I did with the i1000. I guess I could turn it face down but that is stupid.

Unless you wear the belt clip on your glasses, how do you plan to look
at the display? -- If you wear it on your belt, like it's designed to be
used, then this is an ideal design as it protects the face.

Yes.

Hold the phone in your hand, cup your hand around the phone and the
sound will reflect up towards you.

I use the beltclip for lots of things, not ONLY a beltclip. Don't put me in
jail for using it for other places. I clip it on my sway handle in my
vehicle and yea...hands free headset is plugged in and all. So in order to
take a friggin call I need to unclip the phone, see who it is, open the
phone and answer it. Lots of work for a "hands free" phone. It's just dump
covering up any external display in my opinion. They could have made a clip
which let that display come through...but why do some thing so easy to make
it useful?
My god man, holding the phone in such a way to have the audible sound
reflect off my palm and shoot upward so I can hear it better is not a
solution for me. I don't want to "think" about how I'm holding the phone or
worry about how I'm holding it. I can't be the only person that thinks
putting a speaker on the rear of a phone is just a dumb idea. Try this at
home. Turn all your home theater speakers around so they're not facing you,
but point them at the wall so the sound will bounce back. This is what you
are telling me to do.
My solution is to ditch this piece of crap and find another Nextel.

Go buy a non-oem clip from some other vendor. i havnt looked specifically
for the i730, but i know you could buy many types of clips for the
i1000--inward and outward facing. about looking for another nextel, this
time go look at it in a store and actually see if it will meet your needs.
also, calm down!

Well, if you didn't research what you planned to buy BEFORE spending
money...you are a total idiot! Next go buy an after market/non-oem belt
clip, there are lots of them, and you will see your precious external
display face out. Just don't run back here and cry when its beat up
from things you lean up against.

Ok here goes. With the damn thing clipped to your belt. Take it out of
the clip to see the external display. That takes less time that trying
to unclip it from your belt or your pants pocket. When you open the
phone to select the person you want to DC after you beep them, CLOSE
THE DAMN PHONE! this way the damn speaker is right where YOU want it.
Finally, what fvcking idiot would spend money for a phone they hadnt
gone down to check out yet?

ROFL. Thankyou....

The clip thing kinda bothered me too. I don't really see the point of an
external display if the freaking display is face-down in the belt clip.
Kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

If it faced out, would you somehow manage to look at the phone while
it's on your belt? Personally, I can't bend that way, nor would I try
in public.
The idea is that you'll take the phone off your belt, look at the
display, then decide to answer or not. Without the display, have to
open the flip (either answering the call in the process, or disabling
the "Answer-with-flip" feature)

Well, since you talk out of your a.s and have sh.t coming out of your
mouth, it sounds like the phone was designed just for you!!

the clip keep the external display when it is face in so you won't mess up the display on something. I pay another batt. cover for $6.00 than a screen
CH - 13 Apr 2004 03:28 GMT
All Nextel flip phones are aligned "face-in" to the clip, not just the 730 -
this is to protect the external display from scratches. Unless you are
unusually flexible, it is not possible to see a display of a phone when it
is clipped to your belt anyway. The very loud speaker is on the back of the
phone to improve sound quality when the phone is in the belt clip. I
suggest pressing the "upper" of the two volume buttons to increase volume,
or placing the phone speaker down on a hard surface to improve volume when
there is much background noise. I have had several speaker phones from both
Verizon and Sprint and the Nextel i730 has been far and away the best I have
used.

I strongly agree with both of your complaints. Idiots.
