I'm having trouble with creating my own personalized ringtones. I can
play mp3's in the media player but cannot set them as a default
ringtone. I tried an alternate method of setting an mp3 ringtone for a
group in my contacts folder. Still no luck.

Looking for another method of creation I downloaded the nokia media
development kit. I exported the default nokia ringtone format from an
mp3. After sending to my computer I tested still no luck.

Could anyone shed some light on this for me. I really would like to
get my own ringtones working.

Hello!

Oxygen Phone Manager II ( http://www.opm-2.com/opm2/ ) has advanced caller
group management section in which you can set your tones as Caller Groups
ones.
Just, connect your phone with Oxygen Phone Manager II, read its phonebook,
the gallery and caller-group parameters; left-click once on 'Caller group'
section on left 'Phone Explorer' panel, then choose desired caller group and
set new tone in 'Caller group parameters' frame.

PS: Caller groups section works in read-only mode in trial version. You can
order the full version of our software from 'Help' menu of our program.

Maybe try resetting phone to factory defaults: code string is five digits
1:2:3:4:5 on any Nokia phone.
Open the MP3 file on the phone, don't play it, look at its Options. Set it as
the default ring tone. What could be simpler?
