Kind of OT: Contract/pay as you go

Fed up with my contract so going to get rid and go to PAYG when the contract
ends.

Two questions:

1) Are there any decent PAYG out there with regards to call charges/benefits
etc..

2) Can I keep my number from my current mobile or not?

I changed from Orange contract to PAYG. Easy, no problems - and they
even gave me 12mb of GPRS (Orange World) for one month for free! and
£1 call credit.

Their GPRS is the cheapest of any PAYG that I could find - don't know
about calls as I don't make many.

Perhaps if you gave details on what pees you off about your contract then we
might be able to point you in a more favourable direction.

I've been on Voda Uk Smartplus+Voda passport, Stop the Clock, and buying a
£15 voice pack every 30 days. Just gone onto T-mobile contract, Flext at
£15 a month with new phone. I'll get more use from my contract than the
PAYT *but* will use the PAYT for when I go on holiday later this year. The
sim will be in my 6310i just to stop the "what's this got to do with this
NG" quips :)

As to whether your number is transferable, it's unlikely you'll be able to
transfer a contract number to PAYT *but* that depends on which network
you're going from/to.

Well I'm planning to go back to uni early next year so my mobile bill is
something I want to keep control of before it drops through the door.

My bill this month was £98, on average it is £30 a month, I have been using
it a bit more this month but that is a bit daft.

My contract (vodafone) is up for renewal in a couple of months and unless
there is a cheap contract out there that I can keep a check on how much it
will cost, PAYG seems to be the way to go unless anyone can suggest
something better? Obviously my main concern with PAYG is that the call
charges are higher than contract, or is that not the case anymore?

PAYG can be more expensive *but* if you stuck to Voda PAYG with the plan and
option I mentioned earlier but with a 200 minute voice pack that'd cost you
£25 every 30 days. Anytime/any network but if you exercise restraint <vbg>
and chat 19:30 to 07:30 you only use 3 minutes of bought time and get up to
an hour to chat. You can buy more than one pack per 30 day period and also
buy text message packs.

What you could do with doing is properly analysing your latest bill and
determining what you need in terms of:

daytime voice calls
evening voice calls
sms use
MMS use - if any

Have a shufty at the T-mob Flext plans they might suit your current usage
though as they're monthly contract you're free to spend as much as you want
or not want to. T-mob also send you a weekly SMS letting you know how much
you've used and how much left of your inclusive credit.

Before anyone pipes up, I should point out I don't have any affiliation or
loyalty to any network :)

Vodafone did this type of transfer for me and that was a
corporate contract phone number also. I think you at least have to be
out of contract and they will transfer it to PAYG. This was a Vodafone
to Vodafone transfer but they still made me get a "PAC" to do it. That
was some time ago so I imagine things have gotten better/easier in this
regards if anything.
