Hi,

I am looking for a good Nokia WCDMA/HSDPA phone but none are available from
my operator in the US (ATT)!! Can anyone recommend one that is available in
Europe but which is also a "world phone" (i.e. has all the frequencies for
operation in both the US and Europe)?

TIA,
-GB

Note that you have to distinguish between a quad band, which has all the
frequencies to operate as a phone in both the US and Europe, and a phone
that works as WCDMA/HSDPA in both the US and Europe. The E90, which I
bought and then returned, is quad band, but its 3G connection is only on
2100 MHz, hence not supported in the US.

A fact not mentioned in the description on the NokiaUS web site.

Nokia do a version of the N95 here in Australia, just introduced via the
Telstra stores, that is quad band and includes WCDMA 850 MHz, which is
the HSDPA network here in Australia called "NextG", otherwise known as
3.5G.

The innards are different from the previous model N95 which I owned, but
the features are identical, including GPS, etc.  The firmware is also a
different version number.

One can't help wondering why Nokia didn't give this phone a different
model number, instead of having TWO versions of the N95?  I think this
model has the suffix RM-120 - in other words, it's an N95-RM120 - at
least that's what comes up in the Software Updater when I checked for
newer versions of the firmware.

Works fine on our NextG network, and defaults back to 3G or plain GSM
when NextG coverage is not available.  And it works in the USA and
Europe too.

Works as a phone, or works as WCDMA? I thought Europe used 2100 MHz, and
that Cingular, at least, used 1900 in the U.S.

Works as a phone in the USA and Europe.  It is 850/900/1800/1900
quadband, and I think the 850 is only WCDMA for our NextG network. (The
"other" N95 I had was 850 non-WCDMA).  Not sure whether it covers 2100,
but Europe works fine on 900/1800 I think.  My previous N95 (also non-
2100) worked just fine throughout Europe, both east and west (Hungary,
Luxembourg, France, Germany, Italy, and England), and 1900 works just
fine in the USA on Cingular, and in Canada on Rogers.
