I am about to buy a 3410(they have very good reviews) so I thought
about doing a bit of reading on how to get them unlocked as I will be
travelling to India soon and want to use a locally bought sim.
After visiting

http://www.unlockme.co.uk/dct3unlocking.html

I was left a bit confused.

The tutorial says that without a data cable, you must pay for the
unlock codes but then goes on to state that to unlock the phones you
need a cable.
"If you want to unlock a DCT3 Nokia WITHOUT a cable you must pay for
an unlock code",  "To Unlock theses phones yourself you must use a
data cable"

So do you need a cable or not? If I paid for a dct3 code then can I
input these via the mobile keypad just like for a dct4 phone
or would I need a cable and software such as Nokia Tools by Rollis as
suggested by the tutorial?

Btw, I've seen a few posts in here mention clips and eeprom tools, are
these software like Nokia Tools that can be used to unlock dct3
mobiles?

Your options for unlocking a DCT-3 Phone are:

a) Pay your service provider for the code
b) Buy a cable and unlock it yourself using epprom Tools software
c) Send your phone to an unlocker to be unlocked (see adverts in
uk.adverts.telecom.mobile)
d) Pay an unlocker for the code (see adverts in uk.adverts.telecom.mobile)

(note: it's only very recently that anyone other than your service provider
has been able to calculate the unlock codes for DCT-3 phones).

Hope that clears things up a bit for you.

Almost...
in option b) is eepprom Tools the actual name of the software or does
it only describe what the software does. I need to know so that when
searching for it it would be a lot easier if the name was 'epprom
tools' (less hits on google to go through)
and option d) after obtaining the code, is it entered into the phone
the same was as for dct4 phones, ie, by pressing the * key etc.

one of the tools that does the job using an mbus cable is called NokTool or
nokia tool ( think upto version 1.8 or 1.9 )
and can be grabbed from almost any gsm site
http://www.unlockme.co.uk/downloads.html or
www.digital-forums.org.uk or
www.all-forums.co.uk or
http://www.gsmschwantz.com/page.htm

for example but there are many, many more.
only takes a few seconds to reset the SP locks and then job done, phone
unlocked.
Just be a bit carefull as one of the things that can happen with this
software is its Very Very easy to change the IMEI number of your phone.. (
make sure the Change IMEI box is unticked and you don't press Change IMEI by
mistake)

Hope that helps ya a bit..

Ok, i'm a fool.  What I meant to put was EEProm Tools, which is the name of
the software.  Version 3.1 is generally considered the best.

And yes, if you get the code from your SP or an Unlocker it is entered via
the keypad just like DCT4 phones.

Sorry for the error in the name of the software; if your still having
trouble locating it just post again and I'll email it to you. :)
