I work for SprintPCS,
I DON'T speak for them.

OK, first thing is that short mail and PCS mail are two totally
different things. PCS mail is a standard web based mail service that is
nothing more than rented space a IPlanet.com (on their server). There
should be no good reason that either the Treo 600 or the the Hitachi
G1000 should not be able to access these. Shortmail is nothing more
than the old wireless web secondary messaging client. Unlike what my
temporary employee friend here may think he knows, shortmail will not
work on the PDA phones, and is not really neccessary. And again
contrary to the esteemed temp from Costco says, call C/S (really) and
get a hold of a tier 2 support rep as they actually get time and
training on these devices. Do NOT waste your time at either the stores
or with any old C/S rep. Tell them immediately to transfer you to Tier
2 support.

And at the rate you are going you never will, as by then Sprint will
have no customers left with your idiotic remarks.

Ben Dejo,
Thanks for the info. Still a little confused:
a) You say shortmail will not work on PDA phones, but it does work on
the Treo600, just not all of the time.
b) OK, if it's not supposed to work, why? The programmer in me just
can't accept that it can't, especially when it does half the time.
c) Your advice for getting hold of tier 2 support is in general, not
for this case because you already said it won't work.
d) Things like Treo300SMS from PDAapps exist to use Short mail like
SMS, right? Use Short Mail on PDA phones, right?
e) Without true SMS, can you tell me why shortmail is not needed? Not
doubting you, but I think that it is still a good way to talk to
send messages to other sprint phones.
Thanks for any help here.

a) When you say it works sometimes, are you sure you're not getting
one-way text messages? They work without a problem but Short Mail
SHOULD always come up with a bad link and won't actually take you to
the message.
b) For some reason the ability for Short Mail was left out of Palm and
PocketPC based phones. I have no idea why Sprint did this.
d) Treo300SMS enables the Treo 300 (and i300SMS, i500SMS) to use Short
Mail. It's still web based in the sense that the message has to go
through Sprint's web server before it gets to the other phone. However
it does all the traditional logging in to Vision and sending on its own
automatically to make it seem like SMS functionality. It also lets you
compose the message on your phone instead of connecting first. It
feels like SMS but it's subject to the same pitfalls and delays as
traditional Short Mail. From what I hear, PDAapps is working on
Treo600SMS.
e) I agree, I use Short Mail all the time. However, when Sprint
finally gets SMS working, I'd rather pay a fair competitive price for a
bucket of SMS like other carriers have than use Short Mail. And the
Treo 600 will be able to utilize SMS in case you feel the same way.

OK. Thanks all for all your help. Yes, I am definitely seeing
PCS short mail working sometimes, but I've learned how to play
with text messaging, and I think using these one way messages
and hotmail will do for me until there is true SMS.
