Well, it would be better if it was free with contract.

I tried it, it's an excellent phone.  But, I decided that for $79 more I
could get the same thing in a dark blue color (I hate silver) and a
camera, so I went with the VM4500 instead.

However, if you can do without a camera phone, then by all means, go
with the RL2500.  It's a great phone.

I have a RL 2000 and RL 2500 and I love them both.  The 2500 has a great color
screen but the 2000 is good quaily (not to say the 2500 is not)

do the accessories from the 4900 plug work with the 2500?

Yes they do.  The Sanyo 4900, 5300, 8100, RL2000, RL2500, and VM4500 all
use the same plug and have the same power specs.

outstanding --- glad that a new phone doesn't necessarily mean another wad
of accessories. Might head down to the store with my laptop and see if
there's any truth to the throttled back data issue that was kicking around
here within the past several weeks. Hell, might even buy one, if the screen
is brighter than a 4900. (no cares about the PTT stuff, at all)

Thanks Isaiah.

Yeah, Sanyo definitely did the accessory thing right.  Every other phone
manufacturer I've tried specializes everything for every phone,
including the accessory port which you don't always have to change.  I
can understand that batteries and cases are going to be different based
on each phone model's unique design, but at least let me keep my charger
and data cable!  It's nice to see that Sanyo got the clue on this one. :)

I tired it, it's not throttled.  If you use the old Sanyo USB drivers on
a USB 2.0 computer though, the connection speed WILL claim to be
28.8Kbps.  However, a quick speed test will provce that you're going a
lot faster than 28.8.

Speaking of which, I can't seem to find Sanyo's USB phone drivers on
their site anymore.  I wonder if they got heat from Sprint for making it
available?  Good thing I archived a copy of the zip file...

For those that don't have the drivers, they can be located here ...

Bob / Isaiah .... fwiw the FD 8100 drivers work with the 4900 / 5300, and
support USB2 ports.

So I've discovered. :)

I apologize in advance if I missed something previously posted
but...according to phonescoop the RL-2500 is not "data capable".  Are you
finding that the 2500 can be used with the PCS connection manager to access
the internet via Vision with speeds in the 100Kb+ range like I can with my
4900?

I was just on phonescoop's site for the 2500 and didn't see any comments
were it's not data capable. I noticed that there was Data Capable category
(answered with either a Yes or a No) as some other phones listed, but that
doesn't mean it's not data capable.

Whoa ... this is a lesson on why not to post a reply and talk on the
telephone at the same time ... LOL. Corrections below bracketed by ** **.

You're probably right. Since the "data capable" question was not answered
with either a "yes" or a "no" but just a "-" this is not a reason to assume
that this phone is not data capable.  It sounds like it probably is. I like
the fact that it gives you a flip form factor and yet still has a speaker
phone like my 4900 which I use often when checking voicemail or other phone
interactions that require entering numbers while the call is active.

Yes.  If the phonescoop site is claiming it's not data-cable, then it's
very wrong.  The phone MUST use Vision to begin with in order to use
ReadyLink, and the laptop connection via data cable also works just fine.

Oh, one thing I DID forget to mention: you MUST disable ReadyLink before
you connect the RL2500 to a laptop, and you can then re-enable it when
you're finished.  ReadyLink is a data hog, and will have control of the
phone's data connection until you explicitly shut it off.  If you keep
it on and try to do a laptop connection you'll get a "network busy"
error when you try to log in.

I think the 2500 has alot better screen than the 2000
Antonio - 29 Nov 2003 19:34 GMT
Actually that is not true!  I have a 2000 and 2500 and the charges are not
interchangable!
Antonio - 29 Nov 2003 19:34 GMT
never tried!  I already sold my 4900 with everything I had sorry!

I must admit, the RL2000 disappointed me.  I saw one working and on
display at a Sprint store, and RL2000 is very clearly a 4900 that's had
some plastic molding slapped onto it and the appropriate hardware and
software kludges added to support ReadyLink.  Other than that, the phone
is still slow to respond to keypresses (I'd say maybe even slower than
the 4900 was), the screen still isn't nearly as bright and easy to read
as the 8100 and newer phones, and the new housing makes it even bulkier
than the 4900.  Vision was also unbearably slow, just like on the 4900.
You'd think Sanyo would at least put some faster hardware in there to
justify the hefty price tag.

The only thing the RL200 has going for it is battery life.  It's a big
phone with a relatively big battery, and that helps.

Laptop speed seems to be the same, but had to download drivers from
futuredial.com. connect seems a little flakey, but that may just be
typical.

Seems like a very good phone, but found both the analog roam and
digital roaming to be weak, at least compared to the analog roam of
the 4900, which was pretty good.  The built in vision on the phone
seems at least 5x faster than the 4900. Power cords are the same as
the 4900. Didn't activate the ready link, went with free p2p.

Can I ask them to switch my phone directory to the vm4500 from a 4900? Are
they compatable??

If it has the same address book format, it shouldn't be a problem. Best
thing to do is to go to your local SPCS store and ask the technician. He or
she would probably be the one most familiar whether the phone books are
compatible ...

I agree!  The 2000 is a 4900.  There is very little difference!
