Since Sprint is claiming I have a 2 year contract even though I only signed
up for 1 year, I thought I'd try to take the easy way out and ask to be
released as they charged me for number portability. As far as I heard, the
NP was mandated but charging clients on contracts for this violated the
contract. This was their response -
Regarding your concern about NPA fee, the Telephone Number Pooling surcharge
recovers the costs incurred by Sprint in complying the federal mandate aimed
at conserving the telephone numbers assigned to wireless customers. To help
you better with your concern regarding the fee, please call us at

penalty only until the end of August.

Two different fees here- you are talking about the portability fee, and they
responded talking about the number pooling fee.
