i plan to get the 8100 tomorrow, so i just want to know what i should ask
for as far as updates...has there been a software update since it's release?
i'm guessing that the PRL needs updating...should i just tell them to do it
all right then?

also, on a related note, since i've heard that the 8100 can be somewhat
loud, i was wondering if that's a hardware thing, or if future software
updates can fix this?

Based on MY personal experience of "Get current, stay current"....
and info provided @
http://www.sprintpcsinfo.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=9
You would like to exit the store doors with...
PRL = 10021
SW = 1.115SP

But allow yourself some time... SW updates take a little time and there is
usually only one machine per store...

When I was there this past Saturday they had a four hour wait minimum after
standing on that god-forsaken line to drop off the phone before you could
pick it up. I was waiting for 25 minutes before I gave up and the line
didn't move at all but this might have something to do with the fact that
they only had two people working that area of the store and it was two days
after xmas, on a Saturday and at 4:00 pm.

John, and for everyone else here ... Bookmark / make a favorite of the link
provided by Joe Gill in the follow up post. That way, you can check the
current firmware versions every few months, to see if upgrades have been
made for the phone.

Most of the 8100's being sold right now have the latest updates
already installed. Check under the "Phone Info" menu before you leave
the store. A PRL update can be done quickly over the air by calling *2
and asking for your account to be flagged for a PRL update. Don't
waste time in the store for this. You do want firmware version 1.115SP
though, at least at some point. I'd wait until after the holidays, if
possible.

The 8100 earpiece, even with the update, can be loud to the point of
distortion. The only solution right now is to turn the volume down.
Perhaps this could be the subject of a future update. We'll see.

yeah, i tried this with my current phone and it updated as soon as i called
*2...maybe it was flagged another time and i only just now called, but i
never asked for it, it was automatic....i don't mind, though!  :)
