International SMS with Sprint?

Hi:

I have read in this newsgroup that Sprint does not support TRUE SMS. A
friend of mine in South America (GSM user) was trying to send me an SMS but
not luck. I tried sending an SMS using a Sanyo 5300 with its web short mail
app and no luck either: I can enter the message and number but then when I
press ok nothing happens. My questions:
a.- Is there a way I can send an SMS with my Sanyo 5300 to a GSM user
outside the US?
b.- Is there a way I can receive a message from a GSM user outside the
US?
c.- I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and I've heard that Sprint has
implemented true SMS in this area (one of the first ones). My guess is that
if I want TRUE SMS I will need to get a new phone, which phones support TRUE
SMS with Sprint? I think I read that the Sanyo 5300 will not be upgradable t
o do TRUE SMS.

   Thanks in advance!

No matter which system you use, our messaging only support
10-digits for the phone number.

It's worse than that. Most Sprint phones do not, and can not be made to
do SMS, and the SprintPCS Network does not yet (maybe soon) support SMS.

What rock have you been hiding under that you think they don't know?
I've been *very* explicit about this every time someone has asked.

Based on the number of posts directed to me, Philly, that certainly
seems to be the case.  Because they're looking at this objectively.

You might want to give that a try someday.

Good old Phil, always giving everyone more and more reason NOT to take
anything he post's seriously.

A Mark Twain quote comes to mind...........  ;-)

I have generally found O/Siris's posts to be on track.
If someone doesn't like a carrier, then they should go somewhere else. Vote
with your $$$.
That being said, I like Sprint PCS and the service they provide so, anytime
a rep ( whether officially or otherwise ) spends their time helping out with
some incite, I would give them more credence, then someone who hasn't really
showed significant competence in this area.

Anyway, just my .02 .

Twerp. Troll. Get lost. Please. You asked me before, "Who made you
moderator of Usenet?" Obviously no one because you're still here. Rob
has more class than you'll ever hope to know.

Look at the quality of the post he is responding to, you moron.  You need to
take a few steps up the evolutionary chain- you might get to 'pond scum'
before you're through.

A friend of mine just tried sending me an SMS from Spain. No luck. Looks
like whatever messaging system Sprint is using is limited to the US only
(inbound and outbound!)

True enough.  Our system only supports 10-digit numbers.  I suppose it's
*possible* for an international message to come in, but we definitely
don't support it.  And it won't go out.

Yeah, same with me on Verizon to my wife on Sprint, and we have to pay
for Wireless Web minutes in order for her to get the message if we send
it through "Short Mail", which is why I am hoping fervently for SMS to be
launched already...

Not an international issue for us, though. We sleep in the same bed... <g>

I've actually just learned that the SMS clients on the phones that will
support it can accept up to 19 digits.  And we in Vision tech support
have been given a list of nations and carrier to which we've succeeded
in sending messages.

We have no troubleshooting tools for this, so it's not supported, but we
*have* been told we can state that it's possible once the new system is
launched.

We appear to be having some issues (I suspect it's not SMS itself, but
the process of launching it).  However, the date hasn't moved.  2/3/04
still as of last night.
