If you are living in the Washing DC area and shopping for a shared plan, you
cannot find one better than this:
AT&T in the Washington DC area offers: 1000 AT, unlimited nights & weekends,
unlimited PCS-PCS, and national long distance included for $39/month. Up to
3 additional phones, each for $9.99/month. $70/a month for 4 phones. What a
deal! (I'm paying about $150/month for 5 phones with Sprint (2000 AT and
7PM-nights)).

Sure I can.
My phone actually "works". On AT&T, there is still quite a bit of blocking
in certain areas.
I have associates using my phone all the time because theirs doesn't work.
Mostly during peak hours, lunch and commute home.
Price isn't everything. But, if you think it's a good deal, feel free. ;-)

If you are almost exclusively inside the Beltway, thats a good deal pricewise.
It is a "local plan," insn't it?, so if you went to New York City all minutes
would be roaming.

I didnt know that AT&T wireless is that bad. You cannot even use your phone
without roaming in NY city.

at&t is the *worst* when it comes to roaming. They'd rather leave you without
any coverage at all than arrange for the ability to make an analog call.
Stupid. I'd would have gladly pay $1/minute if it meant not having to walk 5
miles to find a pay phone. When I had AT&T, I used to have to keep an analog
phone in the glove compartment for emergencies.

You can always get the deal and try to heck out of it for up to 15 days and
see for yourself.
Do some drive tests, take it to work, etc. Make sure you do the tests when
you would normally ( time and location ) use your phone.
They give you at least 15 days for testing.
If you like it, then switch. When in doubt, do your own testing.
If I were going to cancel, I would do so after 10 days just to be on the
safe side.

So who's phone would get dropped? Could you get by with half of
the minutes? How much per minute is the overage? Are you willing to
settle for their 2g system? And their reduced coverage?

I was going to compare features to my Sprint plan but I did not see that
anywhere, do you have a link?
One thing that was very unclear when I was looking for a carrier is what
areas do what features and charges apply. I know AT&T, Cingular, and
Verizon seem to have much smaller "phone to phone" areas then their
typical coverage areas, same with data.
AT&T for example offers legend this from a single 85kB coverage map when
viewing coverage for the National Family Plan:
Next Generation National Service Area
Next Generation Roaming Area
Additional Service Area
Additional Roaming Area
Mobile-to-Mobile Service Area
Expanded Calling Local Service Area
Expanded Calling Roaming Area
When selecting Family Local Plan you are given a regional map with:
Service Area
Additional Roaming Area
Mobile-to Mobile
Service Area
Roaming Area
Additional Service Area
Expanded Service Area
Expanded Roaming Area
All with various restrictions, features and rates and what type of phone
and plan you have, some may or may not apply.
The other carriers are not as confusing as AT&T but not much better
either. It appears to be a crap shoot.
With Sprint, I pay about $140/month including tax for 2000AT, unlimited
9-7 N&W, unlimited PCS2PCS, unlimited data (Vision), and F&CA (no
roaming if under 50%) for 3 phones. If it says "Sprint" for a signal on
the phone, I know what I am getting and what I am going to pay and I
don't worry about ever going over or getting charged for anything extra
EVER no matter where I am and who I am talking to. If it says "Roam",
big deal, just stay under 50% of my total. I'm sure others offer plans
similar but not having to worry about the unexpected or track my usage
is worth it regardless or who my carrier might be.
