I just want to have people use some sort of alias to text message my treo
with sprint. Isn't this possible?  also.. can't sprint users use
mobile.msn.com messenger?

Just get a free email account and have it forward all email to you
cell phone. I use my own domain and email and forward urgent
mydomain.com to my treo SMS address..

Or you could just get a free email that's pop or IMAP enabled lik
Gmail and check it with your Treo. You could use www.chatteremail.co
to automatically download your mail, no need for send/receive

Does the Treo have it's own email address that you can get much like a
Blackberry?

I'm currently looking at switching from a BB7520 to a Treo 650 so I'm in my
learning/research mode.

You can set up the email app to access any email account.
Palm has announced a Blackberry app for the Treo that should be available
next year.  There are email apps available that will "push" email much like
the Blackberry.
You might want to search the forums at http://www.treocentral.com
