C C - 25 Jun 2006 00:11 GMT Is this really fair? I plan to port my number to Sprint because this is the only nationwide carrier which allows tethering for the least amount per month using plan minutes ($15 vision pack).
Thurman - 25 Jun 2006 00:43 GMT > Is this really fair? I plan to port my number to Sprint because this is > the only nationwide carrier which allows tethering for the least amount > per month using plan minutes ($15 vision pack). I think you best go back and read the fine print.
If you get tethering to work, I think you'll pay far more than $15.
Jerome Zelinske - 25 Jun 2006 04:37 GMT Regular Vision does not allow tethering. Vision does not use minutes. If you are not on a Vision plan, but use data, then you would be charged for the amount of data used.

The description says this Sprint Power Vision(sm) choice includes 1) Unlimited Web and Data Access, 2) Watch live TV on the go.... (which I don't care for), and 3) Streaming Radio Channel with Sirius Hits. It also says that "Customers with a ... Sprint Power Vision(sm) phone will be charged $0.02 per kilobyte for Sprint PCS Vision(sm) or Sprint Power Vision(sm) usage UNLESS a Sprint PCS Vision(sm) Pack or Sprint Power Vision(sm) Pack is selected."
So, I think the $15.00 Sprint Power Vision(sm) subscription is good enough to use the phone for Data access, whether on the phone itself or through BT or USB cable.
BUT wait, there is also another choice: "Unlimited Data Plan for Phone as Modem" for $40.00!!!!
Whether I can use the $15.00 choice for tethering or not, I have to clarify this with Sprint.

The $15 Power Vision is for unlimited data on your phone or device and not meant for use via Bluetoth or a USB cable
> BUT wait, there is also another choice: "Unlimited Data Plan for Phone as > Modem" for $40.00!!!! Bingo !! This is what you have to pay extra on top of the $15 if you want to tether via USB or bluetooth (otherwise referred to as Phone-As-Modem or PAM)

DavyDE - 26 Jun 2006 01:44 GMT Regular Vision (1XRTT) allows tethering, I have a Treo 650 and before that had a Sano 8100 (and Vision when it used to be $10) and have always tethered. Power Vision requires the Phone as Modem plan for an extra $39.99 to tether. Read any Sprint plan brochure and regular Vision (1XRTT) is $15 and includes unlimited data and phone as modem use at no extra charge. Power Vision is $15 and Phone as Modem is $39.99 extra.

Jerome Zelinske - 26 Jun 2006 04:44 GMT Regular Vision does not include phone as modem or tethering. As per TOS I just read on Sprint PCS' web site. Regular Power Vision does not either. You need a Phone As Modem option or a Data Card plan.
C C - 26 Jun 2006 15:32 GMT I called Sprint PCS Customer service yesterday and told her that I am looking to occasionally connect my laptop to the Internet with a Sprint phone and asked her what Power Vision additional plan should I select. She placed me on hold for a while and when she came back on the phone, she said she consulted with the technical people and she said the $20 Power Vision pack will allow me to tether my laptop to the phone with out being charged additional data charges.
This is becoming confusing with so many conflicting information on this subject.

You can also take your chances, "flying under the radar." In the past (before the above mentioned options), occasional use was overlooked. Some have reported that this is still the case.

C C - 26 Jun 2006 17:32 GMT Yes,
I just confirmed it with another Customer Service rep just 5 minutes ago.

C C - 26 Jun 2006 19:23 GMT But wait. I'm looking at the Samsung MM-A920's "More Features", it says under "Phone as Modem Capable" feature: "Use the included USB cable and your Sprint Power Vision to connect to a PC, allowing Internet and email access." Doesn't this mean that if I add a "Sprint Power Vision" to my plan, I can connect a DUN capable phone to the Internet!

Sure, you can do it, but that doesn't mean you aren't going to charged up the wazoo for it.
The problem here is that, until quite recently, "phone as modem" usage was not officially allowed *at all* on Sprint -- but plenty of people did it anyway, and so long as the use was relatively small, Sprint didn't bother persuing people doing it. (In fact, until a year or so ago, on many phones it wasn't possible to tell whether data usage was from a "phone as modem" vs. just from the phone's built-in web browser.)
At present, if you *don't* have a "phone as modem" plan, it seems as though tethering still *works* on the phones, but presumably Sprint could start charging you the "casual usage" fee ($20/MB) and you really couldn't contest it when you were socked with $100 for just checking your e-mail with a laptop -- but you can find people saying they aren't being charged this at present.
Finally, realize that there are some people on this newsgroup who will only parrot what Sprint officially supports rather than what people actually *do* with their phones. But the bottom line is that you're taking a risk of being hit with large unexpected fees if you tether a phone and *don't* have a phone as modem plan.

Minor correction: Pre-PAM, it wasn't possible to tell whether data usage was from a tethered phone vs. from a data card. It was always easy to tell if data usage was from the phone's built-in browser.

It'd sure be a lot easier on everyone if Sprint did choose to officially support a certain amount of "casual" tethered usage, e.g., up to 10MB a month or something, without requiring a separate plan. It'd get rid of all the "flying under the radar" discussions...

Now there's a shock- a salesguy who either doesn't know how the product works or is willing to say anything to get the sale. Never saw that one before.

Just because it is physically possible doesn't mean it's allowed per Sprint's TOS.

Nowhere, NOWHERE, does Sprint mention the option to tether with any Vision plans.
