I will be visiting the cities of Seward, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and
Vancouver, BC.

Which Alaska cities will I find sprint coverage?

Juneau - you might find native Sprint coverage here, as predicted in
this newsgroup in 2004 by Andrew Shepherd.

Seward, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan - according to what I've read, your
phone will roam on the coverage of ACS Wireless.  Make sure your phone
has a current PRL.  If your plan includes roaming, then these minutes
are included.

Vancouver, BC - based on personal experience your phone will roam on the
coverages of Telus and Bell Canada.  Inbound and outbound calls to/from
the US or Canada are 65 cents per minute.  Make sure your phone has a
current PRL.

To get your phone's PRL updated, take it to a Sprint store, or call *2 ,
ask for Tech Support, and ask them to flag your phone for a PRL update.
Then you call *2 a second time and wait a minute while the phone gets
updated.

Make sure to set your phone's roaming menu on 'Automatic'.  If it's set
to 'Sprint only' it'll never roam.

You forgot to mention a very important aspect: Is all of the roaming
coverage digital?

Go to http://www.acsalaska.com
Click thru: Personal | Wireless | Resources | Wireless Coverage Maps
If you need a Zip code, you can use 99801 for Juneau.

The 2005 end-of-year map shows mostly analog except in a few places.
The 2006 mid-year plan map shows nearly all CDMA digital coverage.
How much of the plan has ACS achieved?   I don't know.

You might also find CDMA roaming coverage in Seward and Juneau from
Alaska Digitel.   http://www.alaskadigitel.com/coverage.htm

Sprint's PRL puts Alaska Digitel at a higher priority than ACSAlaska.

On my last prl update, it seems the update changed my setting from
Sprint PCS only to automatic.  I was slightly upset that I had to go to
all three of our phones again to set it back.

You should have digital coverage in all those places, with analog
roaming in between. Sounds like you're going on a cruise. You may get
analog coverage pretty far out from the ports.

Just be glad you don't have GSM! When I was in Alaska three years ago
there was no GSM yet, though now some carriers are converting from TDMA
to GSM.

AMPS is really the king of coverage in Alaska.

I just cam back from Alaska Cruise. I did not get chance to check coverage in
Anchorage as I boarded the bus for Whittier straight from the airport.

I have Treo 650.

In Skagway phone was on digital roam.
In Juneau I had Sprint coverage in the ship and in town.
In Ketchikan phone was on digital roam.
In Vancouver phone was on digital roam.
