Hi - longtime off-contract Sprint customer.. Having jst jost my Sanyo
4900 that i had for six years..
i need to pick up a replacement.  I know it's an oldie, but have always
liked the signal strength
and voice clarity of this model on the Sprint network.  Also note that
it gets solid reviews over the
years online...

Before i just pick up a replacement on Ebay, any suggestions on a more
current (more compact?)
model - same no-frills needs as before... i.e., i don't really care
about camera and extras..mainly
it's about the reception and voice quality/clarity first and
foremost... and... i also hear Sanyo to
be best-suited for Sprint PCS usage over other models. id GREATLY
appreciate your advice,
as I just havent paid attention to the phone marketplace in the past
few years.

Thanks much!

Mike

Since my first Sanyo phone about five years ago I have stuck
exclusively with that brand, and never been dissatisfied. My most
recent is the 8300, which I'm quite happy with. I also loved the 4900.

If you're buying a phone new I definitely recommend another
Sanyo.

I have a lightly used 4920 with a  new battery in perfect
condition for sale if you're interested. Please feel free to write and
make an offer. The performance is identical to the 4900, but it is
slightly smaller and has a somewhat longer battery life.

I usually don't have no more than one phone at a time (especially the
newer model) so I don't have any specific brand/mode to recomment.  But just
happen to read your idea of picking up a phone one eBay so I just wonder why
not pick the FREE or nearly free at Sprint store?

BTW, these are what I know what Sprint has to offer

- Sprint user gets up to $150 OFF every 2 years, or you will get whatever
lowest price Sprint has on Internet or in store.  Less if less than 2 years

- Or user can get 1/2 OFF of the retail price of the returned phones with
less ## minutes or less than 1 hrs using (the tech told me but I can't
remember the exact hour, but they should be very very new).

Well, I upgraded mine and they charged me $36 fee for activating the
phone, and still waiting for $100 mail-in-rebate (almost 2 months now).

SANYO, I only owned the PM-8200 and the thing I don't like about Sanyo is
the limited and fixed PHONE list.  Or may be because the menu is too
complicate for me that I didn't find more option, but it seem the PM-8200
gives me 3 #'s

(1) Home (2) Cell (3) Work or something like that, and I don't think it
gives any option to change those fixed options (?)

My newer Samsung A-900 gives me (5) numbers and I can re-arange, and can
have multiple Cell/Home/Work/Fax etc. #'s which is much more flexible than
my old Sanyo (my oder one was LG and it gave similar option too)

Hi Joel, the only reason i am not going through Sprint is that i have
been out-of-contract
for several years (through Retentions).  THey told me if i wanted a new
phone, that in order
to get a credit toward one (and basically get one for next to nothing)
i would in turn have to
sign up for a Contract.

Thanks  again,

Mike

I was in the same boat as you.  I've been an SPCS customer since, uh,
1998, I think it is.  (Was an early adopter in the Metro-Detroit
area.  First had a Sony CM-Z100 - about one of the coolest phones
ever made, IMO.)

Managed to stay with my old plan with 300 min., FIMF, etc. for $30/mo.
all these years.  I liked not being tied to a contract and I didn't
use the phone enough to need more minutes, free nights and weekends,
etc.  Wasn't interested in wireless web and all that.  But then my
wife's old VZ phone's battery started going, I hadn't been very happy
with the last two el cheapo phones I'd bought from Sprint and wanted
something better, so I finally decided to bite the bullet and sign up
for a two-year "Advantage" plan.  It was the least expensive way to
get my wife and myself *nice* new phones.  In the end, we'll end up
spending little more than we did on the old plans together, and we'll
probably even save money--what with the free nights & weekends
(she'll use that ;)), free SPCS->SPCS calling, etc.  (*And* she likes
her new phone so much, she actually *uses* it!)

What finally did it for me was coming to this conclusion: I'd been
with SPCS all these years, I'd been happy with them, I had no plans
to change, so why not take advantage of what'll they'd give me with
a contract?

We both went for the Sanyo SCP-2400 (flip).  Good reviews on
PhoneScoop.  We both like our new phones so far.

I went from a 4900 to a 7300 and am now on my 2nd. Small, works great, no
camera, just a good phone.
