I am thinking of getting the IC-502. I have to have Nextel
Walkie-Talkie, but want better phone service if possible. The Sprint
network used to work reasonably well for me 4 years ago, but I'm
wondering if it has gotten any better in Chicago area.

I also would like to know if there is a way to block all incoming
messages except from Sprint/Nextel themselves. In other words, I don't
want people to be able to send me messages in SMS or any other format
that are not generated by Sprint/Nextel. Recently I started getting
messages on my Nextel phone from people I did not know and about whom I
had no interest. Each one cost me $.10. Not a big deal, but they do add
up if things get out of hand.

I checked the Sprint/Nextel FAQs and did not find an answer.

Thanks In Advance.

Don't know about service in Chicago...

With SMS you have 2 choices:  All or none.

Your milage may vary on this solution...I say this because I know it
works with sprint phones when signed into the online account, but, I
am not sure if the Nextel side of things has the exact same
functionality.

If you sign into your account, there should be a "My Online Tools"
section.
Click on SMS Messsaging.  Then under 'Text Messaging Options' click on
'Settings & Preferences'.
If it is set up like the 'Sprint' side, there will be 2 options here
for you to build a list.  either an accept all list, except for the
numbers that you add to the block list, OR a Block All list, except
for numbers you specifically input.  If you choose the Block All
feature, it will still allow messages that are specifically sent from
sprint, as there is never a charge for these anyway, and if you add no
numbers to the list, it will not allow other sms to get to you.

If the Nextel side doesnot have the same options available, It may be
your best bet to email into Nextel customer care and see about what
options are available.  Their email address is Online@sprint.com.  If
you email them, please include the following information in the email
besides your question.

a. your Nextel phone number
b. your Billing address as it appears on your Nextel account.
c  your Email address as it is set up on your Nextel account.
d. If you donot have an email address set up on your account, you
should be able to provide either your account password, or the last
four of the account holders ssn.

This will help them access your account without having to email you
back to ask for the information, saving you, and them a step so the
can help you faster.
