Cellular Phone Forum / Providers / Sprint PCS / July 2007EVDO-Rev A is topsy turvy!
NW of Chicago I am, I guess, fortunate to have REV A up and running but I'm wondering if anyone else using the Sprint Wireless Broadband service is experiencing or has experienced intermittent failures of the EVDO cell resulting in download speeds of 9-46 kbs and uploads of 210-280 kbs. Sounds whacky, I know, but between myself and one or two of their more intelligent techies the problem apparently is isolate to one particular cell site about 3/10 mile from me as my card and software have the most up to date firmware and software versions and I've tried both the "faulty" cell and and adjoining cell in rapid succession (literally going mobile)and the damn card works fine in one cell but not the other. Full quieting signal at home (six bars, -70 to -74 db signal)even when the cell is acting up. When it is working properly I can count on an average download speed of >1200 kbs and uploads of anywhere from 270 kbs to around 479 kbs. System will go goofy for 3 to maybe 13 hours and I'll suffer with crappy dialup (or worse) download speeds and 1X upload speeds. Interestingly, if I force the card to use only the 1X signal, I will get a nearly synchronous upload/download around 120-130kbs. Sprint's been trying to figure this out (don't know how hard) for a couple of weeks and the problem's been existent for a good two months or so. Not terribly hot but, yes, it is "warm." Seems like the downtime (which is kind of hard to detect since I'm not on 24/7 (my wife only THINKS so)) seems to start late afternoon and then run throughout the night when it's NOT hot. I've even had instances where I KNOW it went out after dark and returned within a couple of hours. Worth mentioning to them though. Thanks. It is also possible that for some reason there is an abnormally large amount of EVDO use off of that particular tower you are having trouble with durring those times of slower connection speeds. It may be a good idea for you to kind of keep a log of the outages for say 7 days, and then call and have a specialist pull up the tower reports in your area to see if there is a correlation between the two. Sometimes even technical support can use a little bit of help, and since you are having the issue you are in the best possition to be able to offer it. That's why I'm paying this kind of $$ for wireless - no cable or DSL service available out here. Even Sprint didn't think usage was tied into the problem. As for the logs and help, I have documented my problems over the past several weeks AND taken the time to run out while the system is messed up and confirm that it's NOT my card at fault, but their cell. Won't work in this cell at 1400hrs, drive down the road five miles and get excellent results at a new cell at 1406hrs, return to this cell at 1415hrs and can't even raise their test site. EVDO Rev A is the BOMB here is Southern California. No problems here. I don't think so- he's able to connect to other towers in the area and if you read his latest post, Sprint has confirmed it is not his card or computer. It sounds like they have a bad tower. It's bound to happen every once in a while. At this point, I have Sprint calling ME every couple days telling me what they are "doing" (apparently calling me to ask if it's all better now and repeatedly asking the same questions<g>). If it doesn't clear up soon, I'll probably try your suggestion and see if I can win one of their "needy customer" letters telling me to piss off and leave without an ETF. I'll take it. The company I work for manufactures EV-DO Rev A equipment using the Sierra 5725 radio. We are experienceing serious problems that seem to be localized to an area NW of Chicago, Palatine to be precise. I'd like to compare notes off list if you wouldn't mind.
