Picked up a T-Mo EasySpeak branded 3595 at Target today (for $59.99
straight- no rebates required- not a bad deal for a spare "cheapie"
phone with GPRS, IMHO.)
Silly question #1: Anyway to stop the god-awfully loud power-on
melody? Geez! What was Nokia thinking? What's next year's model
going to have? A .wav file of a guy yelling "HEY, LOOK EVERYBODY!!!
I'VE SWITCHED MY G--D--- NOKIA CELLPHONE ON!!!"
#2- Does this version of the 3595 actually have 850MHz like the manual
suggests? My current "real" phone, a 3650, doesn't, and this 3595
would make a nice "travel" phone in Cingular areas if it does.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yes it does and T-Mobile didn't have it disabled in the firmware.

Did you bother to check the user's manual? In most likelihood it's
under settings/phone settings. Did you even check?

Even if it does have 850 that won't help you at all since there's no
850 GSM roaming in the US. If you go to Ecuador there's 850 roaming,
but none in the US. And of course you can't roam with a prepaid
account.

to be fair, though, it does give you a bit of
extra safety for calling 911.

If you want extra saftey for calling 911 a GSM phone is a poor choice.
If you merely want a phone that will dial 911 get a deactivated
CDMA/TDMA phone with AMPS backup.
