Anybody knows how long one must commit to a T-Mobile plan before they
are willing to unlock their phones?

Thanks,
Rudy

Not sure about exact time but they unlocked a phone for me on a prepaid
account after 2 months. As far as I can tell anyone with a prepaid or
postpaid account can request the unlock code for any phone in their data
base. I got the code for a phone picked up at a thrift store and it was not
the phone I set the prepaid acoount up with.

There also seems to be some sort of per phone limit. I just got my new
(still under the 1 yr warranty) Nokia 3595 unlocked by T-Mobile. But, my
2.5 year old Nokia 3390 gold... at the moment, they are refusing to unlock:

Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. All phones sold by T-Mobile are locked for use by T-Mobile SIM cards only. To unlock your handset, you must meet the following criteria and this criterion cannot be waived.

-You must currently have an active account or an account that has been cancelled less than 90 days ago.
-You must have at least 90 days of continuous active monthly service.
-The account must not be delinquent or in Write Off with an outstanding balance.
-Only one SIM Unlock code per active line of service.
-The name on the request must be listed on the account as the billed party
name, authorized user, or contact name.

You don't even need to contact T-Mobile for the unlock code for your
Nokia 3390.  Go to http://www.uniquephones.com and register with the
service.  You will have access to an online unlock code calculator for
DCT3 and DCT4 handsets.  3390 is a DCT3 phone.  If they don't have
your phone model listed use 3310 (Euro/Asian equivalent) and for the
provider/operator code use 310-20 (even though the code for all of
T-Mobile except in CA is 310-26.)  Just for S&G I called T-Mobile to
get the unlock code for a Nokia phone that I had and had to jump
through all sorts of hoops and repeat some of the same information
over and over again before they sent me the code.  At any rate bottom
line was that the code that T-Mobile provided was the *same* code that
I got on my own from uniquephones.com .  If you still want to get the
unlock code for the 3390 register with uniquephones.com.  The
registration is free and you don't have to worry about being spammed
or anything like that.  I'm not sure what's in it for them but I've
unlocked at least four phones through their on line unlock calculator
and never had a problem.

Under normal circumstances, you must be on service, prepaid or monthly, for
90 days before T-Mobile will unlock the phone.
Commitment is irrelevant.
It is the length of time that you are on service.
They may, at times, make exceptions.

Officially it's 90 days with no payment problems.  I've heard that
people can get an unlock code sooner than that under extenuating
circumstances.

My recent experience is that customer service will give the unlock
codes as soon as you get the phone, assuming you're on a postpaid
contract.

That's a better news than I imagined. I wonder if this is just a
T-Mobile practice or other GSM companies do the same, too.

No, each company sets their own policy.  AT&T Wireless will not give
unlock codes under any circumstance.  T-Mobile will give you the
unlock code after 90 days and sometimes even sooner.  cingular used to
give out unlock codes all the time.  Seems to me that I read though
that they are not as generous to give out unlock codes now as they
were at one time.

usually after 3 months i no problem with no more than 3 phones a year
(I went thru that - unlocking my 4th phone in less than 6 months)
call CS and ask for code - they sent code with manual via e-mail

I think that the "official" posture is that they will only unlock the phone
after 90 days of on time payments. I do not think that it has anything at all
to do with the length of the contract.

In my personal instance, I had a 2 year contract that had the phone unlocked 3
days after I bought it.  When I bought it I told the clerk that I was going to
Nigeria in Africa and needed to be able to use a Nigerian SIM since none of the
USA companies have roaming agreements with any of the Nigerian GSM companies.

It wasn't unlocked when I got to London but was before I got on the plane to
Lagos. There was a 10 hour lay over and I spent a lot of it on the phone with
T-Mobile back in the states.

About a year and a half into the contract, I signed into a one year contract
for a family plan with a total of 5 phones. I got the unlock code for each
phone the day I received the phones. I was able to provide T-Mobile with the
IMEI numbers when I received the phones..

That's a reasonable period in my opinion, especially when they provided
the phone free or at a subsidized price.  I was afraid they might want
to commit me to 1 or 2 years.

I am interested in it for similar reason, except I want to be able to
use it in Europe with local SIMs there, much of it actually also in
T-Mobile service areas.

Now I wish I could find a nice, preferably flip type tri- or quad-band
phone at a T-Mobile subsidized price for light use ($19.95/ mo.) or
pre-paid plan because I need it mostly for emergencies only.  Any tips
on that?  I found some of the local T-Mobile store staff very hard to
get to talk about their best deals as they always try to steer you to
the more expensive ones (understandably.)  They also might not be as
knowledgeable as some of you, more experienced customers here, because
they are often young kids who have not been that long working there or
not motivated enough to learn about all the things their company offers.
They learned the few big revenue producer items and that's what they
push.

Thanks,
Rudy

Tmobile hasn't had and doesn't use 2 year contracts... Most is extend your
contract when certain things change.. and most is 12 months from date of
change...

I purchased my phone through Amazon.com in December '02.  I just looked
up the email with the unlock code, and it was in January '03.  Just over
one month as a new customer.  GIVE A TRY!

send your unlock request to SIMUnlock@t-mobile.com  you also need to
send the following:

*Account holders name
*T-Mobile account number OR T-Mobile phone number
*a Contact number or email address
*IMEI number from your handset
*manufacturer and model number
*a brief reason for the request.

I was honest with the reason "Requesting unlock to be able to place a
prepaid SIM in phone while in the UK"

My original request went out on 1/26/03, and the reply was the next morning.

If they approve the unlock, you will receive an e-mail with a seven (7)
step procedure from "Offline SIM Unlock Department"
Brian Fitzgibbon - 26 Aug 2004 04:09 GMT
The sim unlock over email has been out of service for some time now.
You need to call CS.  Have the info John outlined ready when you call.
Typically you need 90 days of good standing on your service to get the
unlock code, If you are heading overseas they may allow do it sooner.

Good luck
Brian

Don't bother.  That email address was deactivated several months ago.
To get unlock codes now you have to either speak with a CC rep or use
the comments/questions page at the t-mobile.com web page.
