Deactivated SIM - how common to have some "services" still working?

Just wondered how common a situation that I encountered happens with
T-Mobile.  Several months ago I was browsing in a thrift store and
found a Nokia 5190 that had a SIM in it.  Got it for $1.99.  Tried it
there and of course the battery was dead but I figured for $1.99 what
could I lose.  I'd at least have a spare in case something happened to
my main phone (repair, etc.)  So anyway took it home and after
charging for a while (took some time for the battery to wake up but
eventually charged.

Powered the unit on.  First interesting thing was that when unit
powered on the operator text 'VStream' came up.  Then experimented on
what would or would not work.  Found that I could call customer care
by either dialing 611 or dialing 1-800-937-8997, 1-800-T-Mobile,
1-877-606-4801 (direct to customer care), 1-877-369-4588 (wireless
data) with no problem.

Then tried to call 411.  It connects and (at least in my area) will
connect to all numbers in my two state local area in addition to
giving out the number.  Anything out of that area it will not connect.

I later found out that I can call any toll-free number whether it's
800, 888, 877 or 866.

How common is this "condition" or did I just luck out on finding
something that will allow me to call all toll-free numbers and
directory assistance for free unlimited?

Also found that it works in Canada to call 411, but neither Microcell
or Rogers connects for 411 calls.  Didn't try toll-free in Canada so
not sure whether that works.

Never seen one do that, but I have one that does better. After doing a phone
number change back in March and adding a $100 card to it a few days later I
still have a prepay T-Mobile that is set to expire in December from a one
year promo. It never deducts minutes it just keeps on going.

shh... i don't trust the muppets at cust svc... they may change the rules
and backdate all ur usage... they're germans after all... don't even smile
when they take ur money ;-)

i know what you're talking about... my cousin jumped on that deal when i
heard about it here on this NG and told him... he's got the same "condition"
in his SIM as u have... doesn't make a diff if he changes the handset. told
him to shut up when he complained his credit wasn't being used... and now
he'll never call cust-care from his handset in fear of them doing something
to his SIM.

Piotr,
Does that Brand New SIM show as "Unregistered" also or does it show
"VOICESTREAM" or "TMOBILE" ?
Thanks
