I have the $2.99 T-zones plan added to my voice plan, with which I can do a
little Internet stuff on my Moto V60 phone.

However, in the past, I have been able to connect it to my laptop with a USB
cable, and use it as a modem to do full internet surfing on the laptop,
although slow, when not near any other type of connection, and it hasn't
added to my bill.

I've had some troubles with that USB connection lately (Motorola USB Modem),
so haven't done it lately. My next phone will have Bluetooth, and then I
hope to be able to do this via Bluetooth, rather than the USB cable.

But I believe I have read something here about T-Mo blocking ports, so that
cannot be done any more. Can someone verify that? Is that impossible now,
without the extra $20 per month Internet plan? (I don't use that enough to
justify that extra price every month.)

How about CSD? Using the T-Mo phone as a modem to dial my own ISP? Does that
still work, taking only from minutes?

It looks like that thread refers to web browsing from a phone, with
alternate browsers such as Opera. (With my V60 phone, not possible in any
case.)

I was referring to browsing on my laptop, connected to the phone.

A quick scan or search of here will show numerous threads already posted
were since October and in some cases before, you cannot use Tzones to
connect externally to handset... TZones is WAP only.... To connect laptop,
your account must have the TMobile Internet added...

CSD is still set up, and you should be able to use dial up to regular dial
up ISPs...

I'm having trouble here, are the 2 sentences connected or not.............

Is this true:  To connect a laptop using DUN to dial up an
ISP (via slow 9600) you MUST have TMobile Internet added!

I can call my isp's phone # and get a modem but you are saying I
can't connect like before without TMobile Internet added....

I used this way to connect 'occasionally' for years with Voicestream
(to check email & use MS Money to do banking) without any extra
fee but haven't used it for about 6 months and have now changed
phones and am having problems but will stop tinkering if the
'without TMobile Internet added' is true ....

Like MS said I don't use it enough to justify that extra price every month.
If true this will be another reason for disliking TMobile .

Next they will start charging for using auto-dial or maybe the loudness button!

I have never had a problem dialing up my ISP to get internet coverage using
my T-Mobile phone.  It's slow (9600 BPS), and uses up your minutes, but if
I'm at the cabin on a weekend, it's an effective way to get my e-mail for
free.  You don't need to be signed up for T-Zones or anything else for this.
The service is CSD (Circuit Switched Data), and comes standard with all
T-Mobile voice plans.

Thanks Mike , I have the cable coming for this new phone........I've used
CSD for years in our motorhome but was starting to get spooked by the
mixed signals from people on this and other groups.

Thanks again

GPRS w/T-Zones works if the proxy settings posted in the Howard forum
are applied to Internet Explorer under the settings for the GPRS
connection. Likewise if you use a PDA, set the proxy "on" and use the
same settings.

Best wishes.

Does it work with T MO To Go (prepay)?

Yes, I know there have been threads about it, I mentioned that, but there
seemed to be some disagreement about it, I wasn't clear about it.

What about the "enable port 80" thing? Is that only for connecting with
handset, not with external computer?

So, dialing up from computer through T-Mobile phone *99***1# (old number for
dialing up T-Mo GPRS through computer) doesn't work any more? Or is there a
new number, new settings?

> CSD is still set up, and you should be able to use dial up to regular dial

I wasn't able to get it to work today. I finally got the "Motorola USB
Modem" to appear again in my list of modems, as connected. Then I set it as
the modem to use for my ISP dial-up, and tried it. I kept getting an error
message about "unable to connect to other computer", or something like that.
(When I changed the modem back to my normal dial-up modem, it connected
fine.) So, I'm wondering if there is a problem with CSD as well, or just
with my setup? (I used to be able to do this, dial up my ISP through my
T-Mobile phone.)

Have others still been able to dial-up their ISP through T-Mobile phone as
modem (CSD)?

Anyone still able to connect laptop via T-Mobile GPRS without the monthly
Internet plan? (The plan is probably a good deal for those who use it a lot,
but for someone who might only occasionally wish to connect that way, not so
hot.)

It's quite simple. It either works or it doesn't. T-mobile does not
support tethering using t-zones, but it will work under many
conditions.

you want to use GPRS and have t-zones on your account:

Configure the device you are tethering to the phone to use the proxy
and port settings as found at howard forums. (I posted a link to the
info yesterday)

Using CSD:

Configure the device you are tethering to the phone just as if you were
using an ordinary modem, except choose the appropriate driver.

good luck,
steve

By "tethering", you mean connecting a computer to the Internet through the
T-Mobile phone?

In other words, although officially such GPRS laptop usage (without
unlimited data plan) doesn't work, many people get it to work with those
settings?

I'll try them, and see if it works.

As I wrote, I tried that today and it didn't work, although it has in the
past. Have others been able to connect that way via CSD to their ISP lately?

I tried. I'm not sure exactly how to set those settings, on a Windows XP
computer. Let me see if you can clarify.

The message there at HF says the following:

"Just set turn the proxy to 'on' and use the following http ip and port:

216.155.165.50 port 8080."

I assume by http ip they mean IP address, correct? So, I went to Properties
for that connection, then chose Networking. highlighted Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP), clicked Properties, then instead of the default "Obtain an IP
address automatically", chose "use the following IP address", and put in
216.155.165.50. Was that the correct way to set IP for this connection?

To set proxy to 8080. I see only one way to set proxy server. Not in those
connection properties in "Network Connections", but in "Internet Options",
"Connections" tab. I highlighted that GPRS T-mobile connection, chose
"Settings", then "use a proxy server for this connection". It then asks for
"address" and "port". The directions above list port 8080 for the proxy, but
no address. What should be the address? I ended up putting 8080 in both
fields, but I don't think that's correct.

I used the dial-up number *99***1#  which I had read about here quite awhile
ago, username wap, no password.

I got the error message:

error -734

the PPP Link control protocol was terminated.

What did I set up wrong?

You are setting the proxy. nothing else. Not networking.

The ip address. you have complicated the idea. Just follow the
instructions in the simplest way possible.

Why the vagueness? "The directions" were not written for Win XP, but for the
Opera browser on a phone. You said it will also work on a computer attached
to a phone, why not tell us how, rather than just "follow the directions"?
(I explained how I tried to do that in detail.)

"The directions":  "Just set turn the proxy to 'on' and use the following
http ip and port:

> 216.155.165.50 port 8080"

Say IP, so I assumed it meant set IP address.

Do you mean that IP address should be put in the field called "address" in
the proxy dialogue?

I think that setting for proxy under "Internet Options" only affects
Internet Explorer, no? Or does it affect all Internet programs, including
other browsers, e-mail programs, etc.?

So--should the IP address in Networking be left to "server-assigned"?

What settings do you use to dial-up? The ones I mentioned?

Try removing the +cgdcont=1,,"internet2.voicestream.com" from the Extra
Initializing section of the Advanced tab under your Motorola USB modem
driver before trying to dial your ISP using CSD.  That string is used
for establishing a connection for T-Mobile GPRS.  The ISP you're trying
to dial doesn't recognize it and that's why your getting the error.
It's like trying to dial T-Mobile GPRS without it.

dial *99#
no username
no password

216.155.165.50 is the address you put in proxy settings along with port
8080 not in tcp/ip settings.  Make sure you change tcp/ip back to the
default before you try again.
