MWI is it different on different manufacturer's handsets?

Seattle is supposed to get the new Comverse VM platform installed
sometime between tonight and tomorrow.  With the new system we're
supposed to get a message waiting indicator (MWI) instead of the text
message I now get.  I know that Nokia handsets use the o_o icon but
wondered what other manufacturers (Ericsson, Siemens, Mot, etc.) use.

My Motorola v3 uses an envelope like the SMS indicator but instead of a
pen next to it has ))) to indicate voice.  Motorola used to use the O_O
tape recorder icon but I guess thay thought that was a bit
anachronistic.  BTW, don't be surprised if you don't get MWI right away.
The Converse cutover happened here in Hawaii in mid December but we
didn't get MWI till the 1st week of March.  A week prior to the MWI
activation there was a system message played whenever VM was called.

Is there any advantage / disadvantage of the new VM system vs. the old one?

The use of true MWI is a big advantage (to me at least). Now I know when
I have a VM as opposed to a text message by getting a different ringtone
and a specific display with one touch softkey to go to VM. I don't have
to go through the steps of opening the message and deleting it as the
MWI indicator will go off when there are no new messages remaining.
There have been times when I didn't realize that there were still
unheard VM's until I noticed that the MWI did not turn off. With the old
system, if I forgot to turn delete the text msg I would sometimes think
zI had a new VM when I didn't. BTW, I noticed a typo in my previous
post; it's the Comverse (not CoNverse) system.
