I have been reading a couple of threads on the HowardForums.com website
lately.  It appears that several ALLEGED TMobile Reps have been informed
that the Razr will be released by TMobile on July 11th.  No prices yet,
but 2 of these posters were "right on" when it came to info on the V330
release date also...

Is the Razr firmware any better than the V330's?  If not, I would strongly
suggest you avoid this phone.  If it is, then why is the V330 so screwed up?

Not sure what the v330 issues are but I can tell you that the razr works
exactly as advertised with no bugs.

Yes, what are the issues with the V330?  I just got one yesterday.
I'm leaving the Kyocera 7135.  It's a woderful phone if it didn't
require a hard reset every other week.  It's also a little big.

Please let me know about your experiences with your new V330. While
there has been some issues reported by others about not keeping the
Shortcuts after the phone is turned off, there really hasn't been that
much negative (posted online) about this phone... except by Mike who
appears to have had a VERY BAD experience with the new V330... it
appears at least as bad as the old V300 which generated numerous
complaints online...

I have NEVER had a bad Motorola phone... albeit I haven't had many over
the last 4-5 years... my V60 worked PERFECTLY for over 2.5 years...
While I am not 100% happy about email being "turned off" on the V330 (I
am told to prevent people from sending photos as attachments to their
emails rather than paying the 25 cents each for MMS) and I would have
liked a memory card option (as in the V635), it seems to be a OK midline
phone with a lot of options... photo, video, voice dialing etc.

The absence of NEGATIVE postings online seems to imply that most new
owners are reasonably happy with their new V330s... A BAD phone
generates a LOT MORE postings than a GOOD ONE...

Thanks for your input!

I use my phone for business, and it needs to work 100%  of the time, not
95%.  Things like turning itself off when it is done charging, may not
bother some people, but when I miss 2 hours worth of calls because of this,
it's not acceptable.

The Nokias that I have owned have always been rock solid.  I'm not looking
for lots of frills (like cameras, etc.).  All I want is quad band GSM and
modem capability so that I can use the phone with a laptop, and 100%
reliability.  When Nokia comes out with a phone like that I'll be upgrading.
Until then, Motorola had their shot and blew it.

Ooooooooooops, forgot about that "turning itself off after charging"
that IS a major item for me also... since I normally charge it at night
when we go to sleep... turning itself off in the middle of the night IS
BAD NEWS...

Now as far as 100% of the time... I would be willing to sell you my old
V60 when I upgrade... it has NEVER had any problems in the last several
years.... HEY I'M ONLY KIDDING... it is NOT for sale!

As for Nokias, I can't give any personal review.. except that I really
do not like BRICKS... I'm a "flip phone" person by nature... :)

So far, I like the V330.  I took it with me down to San Diego this
weekend.  I use TMO on this phone.  The phone had good reception
everywhere, even on an aircraft carrier.

Coming from the Kyocera, the thngs I notice are lack of address book.
I can live with out it, but I admit I got used to it with the Kyocera.

The only charging of the phone I've done is in the car and I'm pretty
sure the phone stayed on.  Is this a wall charger issue with it
shutting down?

My only real problem thus far is getting the phone to sync with my Mac
through Bluetooth.  I suspect this is a Mac issue though.  I'm working
on it, so time will tell.

After the 7135 the V330 feels very small.

Thanks Scorp...

As for the charging and then turning off.. all the postings I have read
have referred to the "wall charger"... supposedly one the charge is
completed using the "wall charger" it automatically turns off the V330

It would be strange IF it didn't work the same way with the auto
charger... unless of course a "full charge" wasn't done and you removed
the phone BEFORE the charge was completed so it didn't have a chance to
turn off... please keep me posted if you leave it on the car charger for
a full charge...

The phonebook issue is definetly a Motorola design issue... even with my
old V60... I sure wish they would improve it... I normally carry a Palm
and my phone because of this... I guess I could get a Treo 650 and do
the same thing...

Maybe I'm the only one, but I charged my V330 overnight on the wall
charger and the phone did NOT turn off.  Now, maybe it was not fully
charged, but the icon indicates it is.  I would think that 6 hours
would fully charge the phone, but maybe I'm wrong.

My wife is sold on the phone simply because she was able to maintain
reception in an area she drops a call in almost daily.  She has been
on Cingular with the V60, but now on TMO with the V330

The only issue I'm having with the phone thus far is the ring type
button on the left side.  I wear the phone on my belt and It's always
changing ring style, loud, vibrate ect.  Now, it could be because I
also have my Kyocera 7135 right next to it on my belt.  I'm, going to
move the 7135 and see if that fixes the problem.

I've only dropped one call all week and the sound quality is good.
I'm liking the phone more and more.

One reason I bought the phone is that I wanted to sync with isync on
my Mac.  I couldn't do it, I was blaming the phone, but It turns out I
need to have the Tiger OS to sync with MOT phones.

I have had a number of Motorola phones over the years, including my current
black RAZR V3, and none of them have turned off after charging up.

I think I read a sort-of workaround, and that was to block access to that
function by requiring a password, and thus it would not get changed
accidentally.

It says "Video Camera" does that mean that video "recording" is
activated on the TMobile branded Razr as opposed to the Cingular version?

I saw that too on their website. Called customer service today to
double check and they say that no, there is no video recording mode.
So, looks like someone posted the wrong info on the T-Mobile website.

Anyone have any idea why they'd have video capturing enabled in
overseas models but disable it for the US market? Are they just gonna
wait a few months, after a lot of people have already bought a v3, then
enable the feature and call it the "new and improved" v4 and get people
to buy new phones all over again? :-)

Anyone have any luck flashing their Razr to allow video capture? I did
ask the T-Mobile guy if it would void the warranty and he said yup,
like I guessed he would. Can u flash your phone using a Mac, or does
that only work on a PC?

I also noticed in the V3's specs that you had the choice of various
sounds the camera would make when taking still pictures, including a
click and  "silent." Can that be true in the US market? I thought that
US regulators had mandated that all cell phone cameras had to make some
sort of audible noise so people would know a camera was in use, so I
wouldn't expect "silent" to be a choice they could give you.

BruceR - 16 Jul 2005 02:12 GMT
I have mine set to silent so the only sound when a picture is taken is a
soft keypad beep.  Which US regulators would have the authority to
mandate a certain type of sound when taking a picture anyway? It would
be totally unenforceable and would have to apply to ALL cameras and even
then would probably not be constitutional.

Video Capture and other features can be enable with a reflash and no,
you can't do it with a MAC. Obviously making changes to your phones
internal software will void the warranty.

Ooopsie. Did some Googling this weekend and it looks like I had
confused some proposed legislation from last year with actual law. When
I had bought my camera cell phone last year, I remembered reading about
all sorts of uproar about people being able to sneak photos while
pretending to be on the phone, etc. I guess this was when cameras
started  becoming a common feature of cell phones. So looks like, from
the articles I could find online, that there was proposed legislation
in Congress to outlaw sneaked photos with cell phone cameras under
skirts, in areas where people expect privacy, etc. and a proposal in
California to require all cell phone cameras there to emit an audible
noise. Couldn't find anything that indicated if any of the the proposed
legislation passed or not, so I would assume it didn't. One of the
articles I read did say that a law had been passed in South Korea
requiring a noise from a cell phone camera, so I wouldn't doubt that
Congress might try to pass a similar law here in the States.

I remember the big hoopla about that. There was even a woman on
national tv screaming because someone could sneak photos up her skirt
with their phone without her knowing it. (Wouldn't she think it odd
that someone talking on a telephone was up her skirt? People these
days... no common sense I tell ya)

Yep. I would think that anything visible to a handheld camera is even
more visible to the human eye. What's the big deal? One can see
more skin exposure at any public beach or swimming pool.

I just checked online in HowardForums.com and everyone there states that
the TMobile Razr does indeed come with 8 seconds video record
capabilities.  If you go to the online manual, which they told me about,
on the TMO site.. it also details the video record capabilities...

I guess Customer service just doesn't know...

I'm thinking about the razr to replace my v300, but I really don't
know a whole lot about them. Good phone? How does it compare to others
in the $200 price range? Pros/cons of the phone?
BruceR - 12 Jul 2005 06:41 GMT
I can tell you that it's far superior to the v600 if that helps. Best
phone I've ever owned in my 20+ years of carrying one.

Was wondering if you could please elaborate on the differences you find
between the v600 vs. the Razr v3. I'm looking to get a new phone and
those are two of my top choices.

Even though the v3 is thinner, I like that the v600 is not as wide as
the v3. How do the pictures from the phone cameras compare?

Also, if there are any Mac users out there who own a Motorola phone,
I'm looking to get a Motorola because they can sync contacts and
calendars with Macs and my current Samsung phone can't. Apple's site
indicates that both the v3 and v600 can sync contacts and calendars via
iSync, but I've also read some posts from Mac users who sync their
Motorola phones with their Macs using PC-emulators and PC software. Are
there problems with using Mac's software? Also, is it possible to
tranfer the pictures on the cell phone cameras to a Mac via USB or must
one spend money to e-mail them to yourself?

Thanks,
David
BruceR - 13 Jul 2005 09:36 GMT
First, re the MAC interface, check out
http://www.datapilot.com/mac_features.htm.  I have the PC edition of
Data Pilot and it's a very good program well supported and well worth
the money.  Works with both the v600 & the v3 (as well as most other
phones). Allows picture transfers to your PC from the camera.

Now to the first part of your question. Having owned a v600 for about
year before getting the v3, here are the differences as I see them.
Others may see them differently:

Reception - markedly better. Marginal locations are much improved.
Displays - FAR superior to the v600 unless they've upgraded it.
Brighter, sharper lettering and clearer pictures. Extra width of phone
means slightly larger screen size.
Camera - better - but don't throw out your Nikon... or your Brownie.
Size - The phone is the same width as the old StarTAC which, frankly, I
find much easier to hold than the thinner but thicker v600. My hands are
average size.
Antenna - Internal antenna superior to external. Dosen't get stuck in
your pocket and won't break off. Location is at bottom of phone further
from eyeballs (I'm not saying that phone signals will hurt you; only
mentioning it because of claims made by some that they may).
Screens - the screen windows both inside and out are made of the same
type of scratch resistant material as used in fine watch crystals. After
8 months both screens are absolutely perfect on the v3. The v600 uses a
plastic film that scratches easily. In fact, after a few months the
outline of the keypad is permanently etched to the screen.
Case - The metal case on the v3 is strong and scratch resistant. Still
looks new even after a couple of drops.  The v600 metal parts are good
but the big plastic piece in the center tends to develop cracks near the
hinge and scuffs easily.
Keypad - Easier (again for ME) to dial on the v3. Letters are harder to
read but I don't text much.

Hope that's detailed enough ;o)    To me the v600 (now a 2+ year old
phone) appears old and clunky (once again to ME) while the Razr,
approaching it's first birthday, is still an outstanding looking phone.
While I wouldn't tolerate poor quality for style, it's nice to have
both. Motorola really outdid themselves with this phone and if I lost
mine I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

I'm sure others will have some different opinions and what I see as good
another may find not so good - that's why they still sell both! The v600
is not a bad phone by any means but the v3 is a worth evolution in a
damn fine lookin' package.

BruceR,

Thanks for your informative side-by-side comparison of the v3 and v600.
Very insightful and persuasive.

Data Pilot looks promising too and actually it does seem to do what I'd
want in terms of synching, which might make make the need for me to
change phones less urgent. But you've done such good job at selling me
on the Razr, how can I resist? :-)

I don't believe the Moto has a complete address book that will iSync
street addresses or multiple phone numbers per contact.  If you need
that then look at the Nokia Series 60 or SE P9x0 phones which will
exactly sync whats on your Mac including address book pictures.

Well, I went down to the tmobile place at the mall today. They'd just
gotten in a razr and I played around with it. It does seem like a nice
little phone. A bit wider than my v300, though. Not sure I like that.

I'm sitting here trying to decide if I want to shell out the $200 to
get one of these. I am going to need a new phone soon... lol
BruceR - 14 Jul 2005 05:38 GMT
You'll get used to the extra width quickly. It's actually easier to hold
on to. Same as the old StarTAC. The thinness makes it easy to carry in
your pocket without a bulge. After having mine since November, I'm still
enthused about it.
