You have to have an EDGE-capable device for one. I just looked at TM's
subsidized offerings and none of them appeared to be EDGE-capable.
You are of course free to buy your own and use it on the network, as
long as it's unlocked.

The Nokia 3220 is T-Mobile's first edge phone. Edge will start working
automatically if you have an edge phone and data plan.

EDGE will only do you good if you have a device that can make use of
EDGE. Otherwise all you'll get is just plain GPRS.
