Someone gave me their old Cingular t637, but since I have T-Mobile, I
need to unlock it to use it, right?  Does anyone know the steps and/or
the code?

The unlock code would have to come from Cingular. Subsidy locks are
applied by the company that subsidizes the phone, and no one else. So
if your friend still has Cingular, it would have to come from them.
I'm not sure how liberally they give out unlock codes anymore.

If you couldn't get it that way,  you could get an unlocking service
to do it for you for a relatively small fee.

SE unlocks can only be done with a cable and software. there is no subsidy
unlock.

That is not correct. I had my SE T610 unlocked by T-Mobile unlock
department. They emailed me the code and the instructions.

In a word:  bullshit!  T-Mobile can get unlock codes for Nokia,
Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens and any other handsets that they
sell.

Unless the settings are hard-coded into the handset you should be able
to manually enter the settings or have them sent to you by T-Mobile or
the manufacturer (such as Nokia.)

Either contact Cingular or find guys on the internet that can unlock it for
you for a fee.
