Anyone know any magic words to say to the retention guys at T-MO?  I've
been with them for about 15 months, and all I want for a retention deal
is 100-150 more minutes/month.  I'm even willing to pay up to $10
more/month.  The guy on the phone said no, but he was really nice.

First off 15 months doesnt exactly make you father time. Second of all what
kinda user are you. Are you on $19.99 a month with 60 minutes , but you want
another 100-150 minutes on top of that? In closing, wheres the beef ? I dont
know where people came up with this "Retention"deal concept for everyone
anyway. Do you call your cable company up and say tell ya what throw in the
2 extra HBOs and ShowTime 2 and Ill stay another year? This whole industry
is still nuts. When will it ever normalize ? I just dont know.

Three strikes on you:

1.  The cable company DOES offer you better rates when you try to cancel.
2.  ANOTHER WIRELESS CARRIER (Sprint) does it, so that's probably where
"people come up with" the idea that T-Mobile might.
3.  T-Mobile has (or had, you don't hear much any more) a "get more
guarantee" that specifically said they guaranteed the best anytime rates and
more services, etc, so it would logically follow that they have some kind of
ability to offer customers haggle rates (even though they didn't/don't).

So it's been done in other industries, it's been done in wireless, and
T-Mobile guaranteed that they would.  Go fa!

I'm a 39.99/month user, who up until last month was on the 49.99
regional plan.  I changed because 3000 minutes was too many and I wanted
the long distance....*sigh*

Now, 600 daytime is not enough, and they don't have a 49.99 plan with
LD.  ATT has 49.99/month for 800 minutes.  I called TMO and chose the
"cancel your service" option on the automated menu, which takes you to
retention dept, then I said, "I am thinking of cancelling and moving to
another carrier, but befoer i do that I want to know what T-mobile would
offer to get me to stay."  The rep was really nice, but they wouldn't
offer me any extra minutes.

Their final offer:  200 extra minutes split up over 3 months (I need
permanent extra minutes), and a Nokia 6610 for $35....which was pretty
nice.  I'd still rather have more minutes and keep my old phone.

How many N/W minutes do you use?  T-Mo has a 1000 "anytime" minutes
for $39.99, but it doesn't have any "free" night or weekend minutes.

My 8290 is getting a little old.  Maybe I need to ask for a deal on a new
phone like the 6610...  ;-)

I am almost at the end of my contract (a few days left), and my upgrade
prices aren't so hot.  They essentially give me $30 off of the regular
activation price, which seems like a good deal, but then of course I don't
get rebates, which are $50-100 depending on the phone, so I actually pay
more.  The 6610 is too expensive, and the 3595 has fewer features than my
t300.  No IR on the 3595, so there goes all my stupid ringers.

Get a T610--if the T-Mobile customizations don't screw it completely up it
will be nice!

Obviously you aren't gifted in the eloquence dept.  You need to know how to
handle people, call back and tell them that you're thinking about switching
to carrier XXX b/c they offer XXX minutes at $XX.xx--then say, but you
really like T-Mobile customer service and are worried about switching to a
new carrier... then if they need more convicing tell them that a family
member or someone will be getting a plan and since you talk to them daily
they would like to be on the same carrier as you, then ask about their
mobile to mobile minute plans, then say, but XXX carrier has a M2M policy,
and that you'd really like to stay with T-Mobile but these other deals are
better for you for whatever reason, and you'd get a highly subsidized
phone... then see what happens... just a thought.

I have.  When I was with ATT Cable, they would regularly give me a 15
dollar a month concession so I wouldn't go back to satellite.  At one
point they were giving me $25 off a month (a 15 and a 10) until they told
me they could no longer give me two concessions.  That's when I converted
back to digital satellite.  I pay a little more for exceptional quality
and lots more channels than cable.  Cable is better if you only want the
local channels.  However, the more stuff you want, the better a deal
satellite is.

Consumers should negotiate for the best deal they can get.  This is a
free market economy and competition is a part of helping to drive down
costs and remove inefficiencies.  If we never demand cheaper services,
then companies would just continue to become bloated.  If one carrier
can't make money, then they'll go out of business and some one else will
take their place.

My contract expired last week, and I've been a t-mobile subscriber for 3
years now.  I asked them about upgrade pricing for a new phone, and when
I mentioned leaving them, they offered me an additional $50 off the
price of a phone- is that a good deal, or should I hold out for more?

I don't know if you could get a better plan. I think you might be able to
get a new phone at a good discount price, perhaps similar to the prices for
new sign-ups.
