Switching from Sprint to T-Mobile

I'm in the process of beginning to port my Sprint number to T-Mobile.
Why?
I had two lines with shared minutes with Sprint. My wife recently
passed away, so I no longer had a need for the second line. I
called Sprint and asked them (as a starter) to merely drop the $20
add-a-phone option, keeping my basic plan intact on the single
remaining line. Sprint rep says: "Oh, we can't do that, we have
to put you on a new plan, plus have you agree to a new two-year
contract." I told them no way would I agree to a new contract.
Decided to go with Amazon.com's offer of a free (after rebate)
Motorola RAZR V3, with a free Bluetooth headset thrown in,
along with T-Mobile's $39.99 plan. As icing on the cake, the
T-Mobile contract is only for one year.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Regarding the RAZR, be sure the one you
bought doesn't have this problem:

Cingular, T-Mobile halt Razr sales due to glitch
Sat Mar 11, 2006 10:24 AM GMT172

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cingular Wireless and T-Mobile USA have
temporarily stopped selling the Razr, Motorola Inc.'s flagship cell
phone, due to a technical glitch that causes the phone to drop calls
or shut down, the companies said on Friday.

I noticed that both T-Mobile and Cingular had temporarily
stopped selling the RAZR V3 due to "quality control" problems.
Sure hope the one I get has the latest fixes.

what is causing the problem?

My condolences on your wife's passing. I think you'll be pleased with
TMo. Don't worry about getting one of the "problem" phones. If you do,
they'll swap it out for you at a TMo store.

After the 14 day trial period they won't.  You would have to go thru
T-Mobile support which is numerous hoop leaps.  Good luck.

Not true.  I have a V330 which I bought from TMI Wireless off their web
page.  It died after 6 months.  I took it to a TMo company kiosk at a
local mall.  They ordered me a replacement on the spot after verifying
my phone was indeed dead, no questions asked.  I paid $9.95 shipping and
got a new V330 delivered two days later.  No hassle.  After being with
Cingular for two years I find TMo to be a breath of fresh air as far as
accommodating their customers.

TM used to be AT&T wireless, right?

I had AT&T wl back around '99 and they sucked.  They were too cheap to
arrange for analog roaming when no digital signal was present;  if you were
within 40 miles of a digital area, but not close enough to actually use
it, there was no coverage at all.  I used to keep an old analog cell phone
in my car in case AT&T wireless left me SOL on the side of the road.

Did TM get their act together?  http://compass.t-mobile.com shows their
coverage much improved.  How are they for rural america?

I'm ready to dump sprint -- I moved to a new state and sprint won't let me
change my phone number to the local area code without signing a new two year
contract and with half the shared minutes and no internet access for the
same price.

When sprint refused to left me get a resonable price on a phone for the
second number because I had the audacity to activate my own purchased phone
in the last 18 months, I started looking to dumping sprint.
LEM - 15 Mar 2006 21:35 GMT
> TM used to be AT&T wireless, right?

Wrong. TM used to be Voicestream some time ago. Cingular absorbed AT&T
wireless recently.

To add my 5c to the main topic - I switched from Sprint to T-mobile two
years with some change ago, and find it to be so much better indeed.
Suburban coverage may not be perfect, but with recent addition of 850MZ
roaming it improved quite a bit too! No analog coverage, however, as with
all current GSM providers... It's hard beat T-mobile on international
rates/coverage though!

TM's customer service is great! I mean GREAT! First of all you can
usually get to talk to the live person in matter of minutes (when I left
Sprint - minimum hold time was good half an hour, don't know what it is
now), and they do listen to your concerns and do their best to resolve
them!

It's REALY hard to beat their international roaming rates if you are
grandfathered in on the 29 cents per minute roaming plan.

*Sigh*... I jumped on this boat too late for these! Nor it is offered to
new customers, of course... But even with the current international rates
- they were better than most US providers last time I checked.

Oh... and T-mobile is the *only* US carrier (at least major) that will
unlock your GSM phone, so that you're able to use it with local pre-paid
SIM overseas!

I am. Sprint's coverage is stellar in my part of the Victor Valley; T-Mo's
slightly less so, but still good, and T-Mo actually has customer service
reps who are interested in doing a good job. Sprint's CS was good for a
while, then tanked when they outsourced their customer service operation.

I don't think anybody seriously thinks sprints CS has ever been anything
but terrible for as long as sprint has been in the cell phone business.  People
avoid sprint cs like the plague.  It's sprint's network and phones that attracts
customers.

When did sprint outsource their CS?  I usually have noticed a strong new
jersey/new york accent for their CS.  I've never noticed indian/asian CS.

For a couple years or so, the CS was actually good. Maybe mid-2001 to end of
2003. They actually managed to cut way down on wait times and the CSRs back
then were actually able to solve problems.

Middle to end of 04, I think - can anyone confirm this? Towards the end of
04, I noticed nothing but foreign accents in Sprint CS...

The 2004 mark sounds about right.  Wasn't that about the time they
started their pursuit of Nextel?  Nextel has always been 100%
outsourced so they were probably trying to bring themselves into
alignment.  My understanding is that they (Sprint) still have some
portions of their customer base in-house but your average customer
goes off shore.

That wasn't my experience.  In summer of 2002 I switched plans and they
disconnected me because they erroniously hit me with an early termination fee.
Then they did it again the next month.  And the next month.  On the third
month, I called 2 days before my billing cycle to make sure everything was ok;
they said "of course!" and then disconnected me two days later.  On my next
call then said they'd restore service within 12 hours and of course didn't.
On my next call, I discovered that their menu system wouldn't let me reach a
human;  I had to call from a different phone!

Some customer service.

I know many people did have problems. The CS I got was actually surprisingly
good during that period, as good for my wife's Sprint phone as I had with
Verizon...

I look forward to seeing you over at

Then, perhaps, start a new one. Methinks, today, many people don't
connect TM with Voicestream.

Might as well start one for at&t while you're at it (though at least
they have ATTWS to fall back on <g>). While you're in there go ahead and
start one for Sprint, sans "PCS."

Very sorry to hear of your loss. If you explained to Sprint about your
wife's passing and they still refused to assist unless a new contract was
signed... that's really, really sad. I think you'll find T-Mobile's customer
relations to be more helpful and caring. T-Mobile reception and call quality
is on par, if not better, than Sprint in areas that T-Mobile serves
directly.

Yep. One of the Sprint reps even had the gall to insist that I mail in a copy of the
death certificate! The account was in my name only, so that demand seemed
preposterous.

Yes, all of the T-Mobile reps I've talked to so far were courteous and friendly.

You've been a worthy contributor in the Sprint NG and will be missed.

John, I'm very sorry to hear about your wife's passing.  I've always
enjoyed reading your posts, so I hope you'll check up on us once in a
while!!!

After my mother passed away, my sister kept my mom's Verizon phone.
The old Verizion phone is worn out, and my sis now wants to switch to
Sprint, as I think it has a little bit better coverage and better
pricing where she and her husband live.  They asked for my
recommendation.  It's really sad when I can't in good conscience
recommend to them the phone service that I use.   I very much like
Sprint's technology, but the CS just frustrates me to death.

God Bless!

This isn't all that odd. Even on TMO you can't go to one phone with a
family plan, you have to go on a non-family plan. (However on TMO it
does not cost extra per month for the second phone, only the third and
fourth.)

I was required to do the same thing when I went to *add* a phone to my
plan a few years ago with Sprint; I had to move to a plan that allowed
the add-a-phone ability. I lost my now-antiquated First Incoming Minute
Free perk through that. :P

I check it once a month or so to see what new towers they put up around me.
