Restoring the missing web sessions menu on a Tmobile RAZR?

Steevo@my-deja.com - 11 Apr 2006 17:37 GMT I have been trying to figure out how to re-enable the missing web sessions menu on a Tmobile RAZR.
This is so I can use the Opera Mini browser to get better web browsing capability. Opera Mini cannot connect, it just hangs for a long time. Probably something about having an HTTP session being required. That can supposedly be added via the web sessions menu.
I looked at a Cingular RAZR and it has the missing menu. Tmobile apparently suppressed it. Clearly that needs to be re-enabled.
There are some posts on Howardforums and motox about the procedure using PST and some other tools. You have to edit a memory location.
I tried mobile phone tools, that works, I was able to access the phone, transfer some sounds and wallpaper, pictures, etc. Clearly I have connectivity with the phone.
I tried PST, but it cannot connect to the phone. I tried some of the other hacker tools, same thing, cannot access the phone.
I tried this procedure of two different computers, one with 98, one with Windows 2000. I haven't tried on an XP machine yet.
Does anyone have any ideas? What should I try?
I would really like to get Opera Mini working.
BruceR - 11 Apr 2006 21:15 GMT You need to do a SEEM edit: 0032_0001: offset 2F: bit 1: WebAccess > Web Sessions Menu (1 on, 0 off)
You don't need PST for this. I recommend MotoKit for SEEM edits. However, to get connected first install P2kCommander. It does a good job loading the drivers and seeing the phone. Once you've done that, load MotoKit and it will see the phone and let you edit the SEEMs. After you make the change, reboot the phone and you'll have the menu.
Here's what you need to set up as a Web Seession to make Opera work:
Name: Java Session Homepage: http://wap.myvoicestream.com Service Type 1: WAP Proxy1: 216.155.165.050 Port 1: 9201 Domain 1: (leave blank) Service Type 2: HTTP Proxy 2: 216.155.165.050 Port 2: 8080 (skip down to) Line Type 2: ISDN GPRS APN: wap.voicestream.com
The line items I've skipped are blank or default. I just copied the TMo default into a new Web Session and edited. Make sure you set the Java Session as your default. It will still handle TZones and TMo Web as before but allow Opera Mini and other Java apps to access the web.

It does the same thing all the other various software does, say "phone not connected".
The infuriating thing is, MPT works. When I plug the phone in, look in device manager, I have a Motorola USB modem. Working properly. As I mentioned I was able to send my phone some sounds, wallpaper, back up my phonebook.
I really have no idea what to try next.

Delete the Motorola USB Modem in Device Mgr. 3. Then run P2kCommander and then plug in the phone. P2KCommander should provide the drivers you need and connect you. Be sure to right click the icon in the tray to make sure it's connected as P2k and not AT.
If that fails, check www.motomodders.nt and www.motox.info as both have programs that will help install the phoe for p2k programs.

Thanks, it still says phone not connected.
I have tried on a Windows 98 machine and a Windows 2000 machine.
It keeps trying to use the Motorola USB modem, if I point to the various inf files that came with P2Kcommander it errors, complaining about a missing USB driver.
I downloaded a Windows 2000 update from Microsoft.com that purportedly has that driver included and it didn't change anything.
I downloaded the .msi p2k driver from motomodders.net to try on the Windows 2000 machine. We'll see how that does.
Next step is to get to an XP machine and see if that changes anything. One has to wonder why these drivers are so flaky. I have had very few problems in this area, until now. Sheesh.
BruceR - 14 Apr 2006 21:02 GMT Sorry to hear you're having a problem. I only have XP so can't speak to 98 or 2000.

I had no luck with 2000 or 98. Clearly those drivers are not reliable on either of those platforms.
I went to an XP machine, and I had success, I was actually able to connect the phone, edit the seem, turned the phone off and on, and viola! I had the missing menu in my web access group.
However, after that I set up the new java session as you outlined. I set it to be default. I then had no network connectivity, not with opera, with and without proxy selected, not with mgmaps. Even t-zones no longer worked.
You had said:
Name: Java Session Homepage: http://wap.myvoicestream.com Service Type 1: WAP Proxy1: 216.155.165.050 Port 1: 9201 Domain 1: (leave blank) Service Type 2: HTTP Proxy 2: 216.155.165.050 Port 2: 8080 (skip down to) Line Type 2: ISDN GPRS APN: wap.voicestream.com
One thing I noticed is that wap.voicestream.com does not resolve. I tried it as wap.myvoicestream.com, which does resolve. No difference though.
I tried making the previous session, t-zones the default leaving the new java session in place. Still no connectivity, even using tzones.
I deleted the new java session and my old tzones worked as before.
I do have the new menu, so that is at least progress. Not sure why the new session did not work and also seemed to interfere with t-zones.
Any more ideas?
BruceR - 15 Apr 2006 02:26 GMT I skipped some items that I thought were inconsequential but maybe I was wrong about that. Here's every entry exactly as it appears in my phone (set as default):
> Name: Java Session > Homepage: http://wap.myvoicestream.com [quoted text clipped - 22 lines] > User Name: (blank) > Password: (blank)

To recap for the benefit of others:

Thanks for your help!
BruceR - 15 Apr 2006 09:30 GMT My pleasure, glad to hear it's working. I think you'll find that Opera Mini is worth the effort!

>>>> Proxy 2: 216.155.165.050 Also thanks from me for helping this work on my RAZR v3 Unlocked. The only difference in the menu options was 'Proxy 2' was listed as 'Gateway 2', which I assume is the same thing.

Yes, I noticed that mine said the same. Glad that is working now. Mgmaps works now too, with the proxy disabled.
BruceR - 15 Apr 2006 20:33 GMT The Gateway/Proxy name is probably part of the language pack - maybe a difference between the US and UK English. Personalize vs. Personalise; dialing vs. dialling, and o vs. ou in things like color/colour. Mine has the US Eng language pack - are you guys in UK or have Uk or HK phones?

rruster@rebulon.net - 16 Apr 2006 12:16 GMT >>Nope. I'm the US, but I bought this phone from a friend. He may have >>purchased it overseas. > >Nope, bought in California at a Tmobile dealer. Found an interesting bit of information on the Net:
"A gateway is widget that translates data from one protocol (like TCP/IP) to another protocol (like AppleTalk) as it flies past. The widget may also choose to not translate some packets, and filter them out.
Important characteristic: protocol translation. A proxy is a widget that receives requests with its left hand (usually from one network), and then launches similar requests with its right hand (usually on a different network). As the results arrive back at the right hand, they are copied over to the still-waiting left hand and returned to the original client. (It acts as a server with its left hand, and as a client with its right hand.) The widget may filter out certain requests or certain responses and not copy them from hand to hand.
Important characteristic: acts as both client and server.
When a proxy operates at the packet level it is a transparent proxy, and the clients usually don't know that there's a proxy involved."
Whether this applies th e difference between WAN/WAP and HTTP routing, I don't know, but it may depend on the capabilities of the phone itself. I'm going to ask around in alt.cellular.tech.
John Navas - 19 Apr 2006 06:50 GMT >>>Nope. I'm the US, but I bought this phone from a friend. He may have >>>purchased it overseas. [quoted text clipped - 27 lines] >I don't know, but it may depend on the capabilities of the phone >itself. I'm going to ask around in alt.cellular.tech. WAP requires a WAP gateway that translates between the phone and the WAP site. HTTP does not, strictly speaking, although small screen browsers may require an invisible proxy server to translate (yes, a proxy can also translate) between the regular Web and the small screen format.
